Did you check for lice? Look my their vent, move the feathers so you can see their skin, if there are bugs crawling around, then it is lice and/or mites. Not all will lose feathers, either.

Do you have a rooster? If so, is he mounting them? That can be the cause of missing feathers too

Thanks Wylie! I will check them for lice. We do not have a rooster so that's not it (unless one of them is confused

Hey All:

I've got 3 broodies that have been sitting on eggs and we've not had any luck hatching....apparently Brewster doesn't make his rounds as well as I thought! So the question is: does anyone close to Dewitt (North of Lansing) have day old chicks coming out of the incubator???

No way to cool off here. I am back to school now, teacher meetings all week, then students start on Tuesday. No air conditioning and more hot air from those who like to expound makes for a long and not very productive day. I miss my mornings with the ducks and chickens already.

Maybe Buttercup will start sneaking around and pick up the slack!!!!

Well, thanks to my crazy friend Cricket, I now have 12 new chicks!

I knew Family Farm & Home was going to have chicks today, but I had decided I wanted to get already laying chickens. But, what does Cricket do? She posts a pic of chicks on her facebook page. I told her that was torture because they were so cute. Then what does she do? Takes another one and tags it to me with the caption "Hi". What do I do? I go out to my bf and said it's a good thing I don't know how to get to Mason (not from here anyway...Aric usually does all the driving and I don't pay attention lol). He asked me what did Cricket do now? I told him about her posting pics of chicks, then he told me how to get to Mason. That to me was permission to go get some, so I quickly kissed him, said I'll be back later and I was gone.

My daughter and I went and I first got 6. But when we went to the gas station, i was feeling like it wasn't enough. Low and behold who do I run into at the gas station? Cricket's husband!! He said they were going back, so then I did too. I tried to justify it saying I forgot to pick up some pine shavings, but I picked up 6 more chicks too LOL.

I then wondered what Aric would say. All day he's been working on turning the "garage" into another coop. It's been hot and he keeps plugging away. He says (jokingly...I think) he doesn't like me going anywhere where there's animals because he's afraid I'll come home with more than we need. This is the first time I went without him (although I kinda just left lol), but his reaction was a LOT better than I thought!!

Now to keep them all alive and pray almost all of them are female. If they aren't, I'm blaming at least half of them on Cricket since she did her form of sexing them with the wing feathers. Actually, I blame having them all on CricketYang!! LOL

Over the years I have had a couple flocks where the head hen thinks she is a roo and did mount the other hens. One even crowed

Good Luck!

Hey Kristen:
Buttercup is out and about and trying to pick up his share of the work, but everyone just squawks at him and takes off running...I have seen him mount his little gal pal the SLW...actually, he has to be on the high side of the hill to mount her! She's bigger than he is now! The older SLW's and Wellies are beginning to submit to Brewster and I've seen the SLW's in the coop trying to kick the broodies out...those gals are BIG.....I'm going to take the rest of the dividers out of the nesting boxes soon!
Take care - N

Your grandson is very handsome! I love teachers too! I should, I was one for 11 years til they closed one of the elementary schools I worked at and then totally got rid of the teaching program I was in. I was a "Parapro", I worked with the disabled. Those poor kids either had to be moved to other programs with little help or mainstreamed with no individual help. I never saw a bad teacher when I worked there!
