The stupid thunder woke me at 130am and I wasn't able to get back to sleep until after 4. The I was awake again at 530am when a second round came through. Looks like we are going to stay wet for the rest of today.

ok, so what should we medicate with? Our vet suggested 4 T apple cider vinegar to 1 gal of water.
btw, we've had this hen isolated since saturday and not had an egg laid in that time...she's 2.5 years

Here is a great page for you to read:

http://attra.ncat.org/attra-pub/coccidiosis.html

and tell your vet to prescribe you some meds to give them.

eta:

I have an older hen too- she is around the same age, and hasnt laid one egg all summer. She was my faithful egg-a-day hen for two years, now nothing. But, she is our favorite and has pet-status around here. She rules the roost. Carmen- our original chicken.

Thanks Mom2em all:
would appreciate input if anyone has had ANY similiar issues w/coccidi - what i don't understand is why it is only this one hen who is exhibiting the mushy/mashy poop..I thought cocccidi would run rampent in a flock if present...I'm going to take a pic of this massive excretion - you guys won't believe it...

Well, had to bury one of our "babies" today.

A month or so ago we picked up 3 BR and 3 IB from a guy who had over 50 and said they hatched in May. Well if that had been the fact, they would have been a LOT bigger than they were. I posted pics and a lot of people guessed them to be around 2 months. They haven't grown since we've had them! I picked up 10 IB and 2 broilers a couple of weeks ago or so and they have all grown 10x more than the others.

Not too long ago one of the babies, a BR was found under the laying box dead. No signs of anything wrong. Today Aric went out there and said he found one of the IB dead and it looked like he had been flattened!? They aren't exactly tiny but they aren't full grown either. They eat non-stop and run around fine. Any ideas?

Keyt, I dont' know what kind of allergies you have, but was just reading about Quercetin. Claims to be one of the most powerful and effective natural remedies to quiet allergy-realated congestion and sniffles. Might help...or not.

Hmmm never heard of it but I'll look into it. I always get allergy problems in the fall, never in the spring like most people. But this year it started earlier than it usually does and it's strking me harder than usual. Thanks for the recommendation!

tech here- the reason he mixed them most probably is because if one has it, you have to treat them all. It is easily transmitted. Especially with a chicken. They step in, peck at each others poop all day long.
Also- any dogs and cats that you have that go out into the yard should be treated also.

Medicate and dump/fill any standing water you may have around the yard, scrape/clean up etc. any roosting areas that may collect poop. Medicate chickens and you should be good to go!

Good luck!

here's a pic - https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/uploads/13163_poop_3.jpg

i would say that the excretion is the size of a pancake (nothing like I've EVER seen before!) if not larger and an inch to 2 in depth.....took add'l samples to vet today - haven't heard back from her...a couple had what appeared to be a bit of blood in it.....

wanted to get this to the end of the site!

Burnt my left hand with boiled water so im 'hen pecking' lol

No reason so far. beginning to think the guy we got them from may have known something. more on that when i can type both handed.

Question: how long does molting generally last? our adult BR havent laid in about a month so we're not sure if its age or molting. dont think we are getting baby chicks anymore and only buying from trustworthy people like vicki or a couple of others.

That looks like broody chicken poop! My silkie used to do that when she would sit on eggs all day long for days at a time, then rush out real fast and eat, poop a pancake, then run back to her eggs.
You said she hasnt laid eggs?
Could something else be wrong- internal laying/egg bound, etc- and the coccidia is just coincidental?

Good Morning!! Everyone asleep? I know Sam is awake somewhere!
