AFter fighting off my cold (darn middle schoolers coughing on me!), my horse and I are going up to Wetmore in the U.P. for our last competition this year. SInce the nights up there do not promise to be balmy, I went to Home Depot to get those little pocket/hand warmer thingies but they didn't have them in yet.

Anyone know of somewhere else like Ace Hardware or TSC that might have them?

Thanks

You can always ask. I don't think ACE would carry them but there is a very large ordering book that, as long as they don't have to buy them in bulk, they will special order them for you. I used to work at a couple different ACE's and there is a TON of merchandise that most Michigan stores don't carry because it's not something that sells in this area. (like Cattleprods! LOL) TSC probably has the same thing. I would ask to talk to a manager and they should be able to help you out or at least point you in the right direction.

Kim, I can SO relate to the dentist thing. Last Thurs a dental clinic had a free dental thing for anyone without insurance (I have Medicaid and Medicare, but doesn't cover dental...until the 1st), so I got up super early and was #10. I had two teeth pulled. Very soon they all need to go because I've been on anti-seizure meds since I was 18 months old and it's ruined my teeth and gums. Well, later that night the numbness went away (took 6 shots to numb me up!) and the pain felt different. Worse than usual! The pain kept getting worse, to the point of putting me in tears for hours!

Since Thurs I've had 2 bowls of noodle soup and 2 bowls of mashed potatoes. I sleep about 2 hours a night..sitting up! Well, to make a long story short, a friend of mine (very knowledgeable!) said it was a bone spicule. Basically a lose bone. After all my studying and talking to my friend Sara, I've learned that dentists are supposed to make sure (through x-rays, etc) that there's nothing left after they pull teeth. Spicules are very common, but most dentists find them before you leave the office. Problem is, this clinic was SO big (on the news, etc) and SO busy that a second exam never occurred.

Since Thurs I've taken over 40 pain meds, narcotic and OTC!! I was already losing my liver due to so many meds in my life so, yeah I'm sure this has made it worse. I can barely talk and my throat and ear is involved too! ER's won't touch it and finding a dentist that takes my insurance once it reinstates dental is impossible!! Ugh. It usually either comes out through the gums or evens out. Can't happen soon enough!!!

Ok, hopefully I haven't freaked you out, but this is a warning: if you have teeth pulled, PLEASE make the doc make sure everything is out!! This is a horrible lesson for me!!

I feel like my poor animals out there think I'm ignoring them! I went out to see them for a few mins today and my other two call babies are now quacking! Life is happening before me!!

Missed you all!!

Is anyone going to this event or have been to a event like this? I have some Roos I would like to trade or sell but it is a long drive is it worth my time and gas? I have one Dominique Roo I would like to sale. I also have 3 sex linked or red star roos, and an undecided number of EE roo for sale, trade or just to find new homes. I also have a young serama hen that I would sell if I could find her the perfect home.

Dawn

I have been a few times but usually I just give away the extra roos. It is better than keeping them. I will be going as I have one more [Phoenix] roo that I want to re home.

I've never been to the one in Newaygo but at the one in St. Louis the bachelor roos sell fast. Not for a lot of money, but a few bucks each. You just have to be OK with the fact that they're not going home to be pets. We butcher all of our excess roos, but I've helped my mom take roos up to that one before and hers are gone within the first few minutes of being there every time. There's an asian family that comes, 3 generations all together, and they buy every single one of them.

Try Gander Mountain -- or a similar Sporting Goods type store -- the hunting stores/sections usually have them out first and you may get lucky and find them there year-round. If not, when is your competition, they always have them out by Nov. 15th.

So how long does it take for chickens to figure out that a nest box is for laying eggs in?
Shmoo is determined to dig a little nest in the litter every time she lays. I've put her up in the nest box when I catch her digging, there are some wooden eggs up there to get the point across, but she just sits there like I've punished her, hops down and waits for me to leave before she goes back to digging out a nest.

This chicken is making me crazy! She won't lay if she knows I'm outside, and it's been too cold in the morning to just hang out there and wait for her to give up.
I don't want her laying in the litter because I would rather not have the others decide to investigate and break her eggs open. Thankfully they haven't done that yet, and they seem fairly uninterested in eggs all together. I also don't want the others to take up laying in the litter.

Will she eventually understand that she should lay in the nest box if I keep placing her up there? Should I paint the wooden eggs the same color as her eggs?
