So sorry about your loss Opa! I can't imagine that happening. This is part of the reason for putting the chicken run under a tree! It's under a big tree, next to the barn (garage-type) and behind a very large house. It would be pretty difficult for something to just swoop in. I know they'd find their way if determined but it would take more work!

The dog will be fine, the nail will grow back. Just keep it clean. I've got a dog that rips the same nail off every year.

Well we've got a few chicks hatched out this morning. The younger ones are always so pitiful as they hatch out and get trampled on by the older ones that are already hopping around the 'bator. And there's always got to be that one little instigator that hops around pecking at all the eggs, rolling them over, using other chicks as a roost.

I'm so glad you understand.

I'll send Ellen a message to make sure she sees them. Maybe they can parade right on through the round of BYC homes.

In that picture you can only see the one, but I was surrounded by geese all chattering away at me. They're so funny.

I was going to say the same, but didn't want to sound insensitive. (I know, I know, when has that stopped me before?) Our one dog ripped one off last year and limped to begin with, but was back to normal soon enough. I tend to be pretty laid back about that stuff though. They're dogs, they're resilient.

There was one incident where I rushed one of our dogs to the vet on a Saturday, thinking it was serious. Only to get there and pay $120 for her to take a poop on their back lawn. Her terrible stomach pains that had her balled up on the floor yelping? Poop. She was full of ... it. She couldn't take a crap at home hen I walked her all around the yard talking softly to her all morning long, no, no.... but after that car ride to the vet and a quick x-ray of her abdomen, by golly she was loosey like a goosey and proceeded to take a giant dump on their lawn for the vet tech. And then? Then she was back to normal, wagging her tail, begging the receptionist for a treat, hanging her head out the window on the way home like it was a summer roadtrip for fun... yeah... $120 dog poo.

I just came in from opening the large fowl coop and it is a little chilly out there right now but it is supposed to warm up quite nicely later. I'm just waiting for daylight, and for Granny to get up, then Hope and I are going to take off and wander our way south on backroads to enjoy the last of the fall colors. I think we will probably wind up in Shipshewana, IN. It really doesn't matter where we wind up, it's just nice to spend the day together without any demands.

Have fun! I love the antique action that goes on down there on Wednesdays. Last time I was there I bought an old free-standing school house chalk board. Had intended to use it for the farmer's market but I think it's a little overkill. I use it as a brainstorming board in my office now and love it. And when the kids come in they play "school" with it. Best $90 I ever spent... though I still need one for the farmer's market.

Briana,
(or anyone else in the Ann Arbor area for that matter)

My mother now has one of our Black Stars, who promptly became broody as Mom set her up in a coop. She's sitting on one egg, but just in case that one doesn't hatch, does anyone have some fertile eggs that we could get for her?

We got all those cochins expecting THOSE to become broody ... instead the chicken I GAVE AWAY who is a HYBRID to boot is the one that goes broody

I am new to the site. I am in Whitehall, MI and have 8 silkie chickens. There is Weezer, Lil Pecker, Brooster, and Chas. Then I have 4 little ones that are yet unamed although it looks like there are 2 roosters and 2 hens. I am looking for more hens in this area as I ended up with 2 roosters that I was told would be hens. If anyone knows of anybody in the Whitehall - Muskegon and surrounding areas that are intersted in selling any type of hen I would appreciate a heads up. I can't seem to part with any of my boys so I guess I add some more girls.

So while throwing veggies into the run on tuesday evening I had gone into the coop part to give them feed/water. Guessin' I didn't latch the door because yesterday I get a call from my husband saying he pulled into the drive from work and all the chickens came running to him from the backyard!

I told him not to worry about it and I'd get them back in when I got home. So I come driving down the road a couple hours later and they see my truck (it's funny how they recognize our vehicles!) and come a runnin'!

I gave them a stern talking to about leaving the coop, grabbed a scoop of thier favorite treats and proceeded in having a chicken parade back to the coop.

After a little investigating I saw I hadn't latched the coop door and I'm guessing a strong wind knocked it open and they took advantage and came out...then it closed...leaving them outside lol I swear they're just a bunch of dingdongs

We have a few free ranging chickens and turkeys right now, which thanks to our LGD's is finally safe to do. It is so funny to see them come running anytime we walk outside, pull in the yard, etc. Even more funny to see other people's faces when they see them come running. I have had people over to look at our boston puppies and those turkeys are so curious and come running up to check out the party, like hey what is going on here? anyone got treats??? who are you?? the reactions range from laughing to running, it is quite hilarious!
