Hello,
I am in Troy MI (SE Michigan).
We have an EE cockrel that we rescued and now can't keep. (No roosters allowed in Troy)
We found him a home in Imlay City and will drop him off this weekend.
We are looking for an EE pullet, or any other docile breed.
This boy gets along great with our dog (small Yorkie mix) and we really enjoy having him around.
Anyone around here have any young females for sale? We just want one. The coop we built is just for one! LOL!

You realize that any chicken kept by itself wil be very lonely. They are social animals and live in flocks. They really need and enjoy the company of other hens. She'll have a hard time keeping herself warm through the winter as well without at least another bird to generate heat.

Doesn't human and dog interaction help? I am just not sure we can handle 2.
I just really wish I could keep this boy.
OK. 2 hens. What kind should I get? I want them young, but not "chicks".
I suppose this is the wrong time to find them?
And just what is the best way to find pullets for sale in this area?
I don't want to be chicken free! LOL!
Thanks for your help!
Celia

Interaction with other species does help. But since you and your yorkie are probably not outside all the time another chicken really would be best. In a flock of chickens some of the chickens don't disappear for part of the day and then come back later, they're together 24/7. How big is your coop?

Our coop is 2'x6' now, but we are expanding to 4'x6' with the hutch part attached. Now we are thinking of 2 hens.
We will let them out in the yard (large lot with privacy fencing) during the day.
Also, the "contained"portion will be insulated plywood. Adding wheels to the back portion. Chicken tractor type.

Well, we have no choice, we HAVE to expand...this weekend! Aric found an ad on craigslist for a lady that was selling 4 ducks cheap. She just called them farm ducks. Not really sure what kind they are but at least one of them looks like a runner. So we drove out to Narrow Lake and they were gorgeous. The lady was selling either two or four and Aric asked me what I wanted. Poor boy, he hasn't figured out my huge love of ducks and I'd take 20 if I could.

They are very sweet! There are 3 females and a male we think and everyone seems to be doing ok so far.

Kim, these new ones are the same size (one might be a bit bigger) as Jax. As everyone was "introducing" themselves, Jax just stayed in the pond, he wanted nothing to do with it all. But, it was like right before bedtime he realized there were females there and he started taking interest!

Round table discussion lol

The one on the far right definitely look like she has some runner

While everyone is wrestling around, Jax just stayed by himself

I had to add this one. When Opie isn't chasing Jax from his girl, they are best friend!

Ditto that. Superglue is some good stuff for cuts and gashes. I agree with Vicki about puncture wounds, if you can, leave 'em open so they can heal from the inside out.

KrisRose - Don't mean to pester you I just want to make sure you got my PM yesterday. My inbox was full and it said "Could not save to sent messages" but I thought it sent it even if it didn't save it for me, but just want to be sure it actually went. If not let me know. Didn't want you to think I was ignoring you.

Well I think I got the gash glued together. It was alot easier to see yesterday. And Cleo has one eye open! woot!!

Diane- I got your message about Giselle behaviour and sent you a message. I do want him. Chickflick mention that Saturday would be good for you. Send me your address so we can GPS you!!! ROADTRIP!!! Coke slupee to go pleeze!

Well, someone has told me what I was afraid of. I posted the same pics of the new ducks in the ducks section here in BYC and they told me I may have 3 males and 1 female. I didn't know you could sex them according to the color of their bills. I knew about the curl in their tail but two of them are hard to tell. Oh well, I love them already.

This weekend we are expanding the duck run. Aric already announced if we do have 3 males and 1 female we should get 1 more female. Ugh lol. He's surprising me. I'm the duck lover here!

The last few days I have been leaving them out of the run longer each day and they are doing very well. They won't go very far from me or the runs which is what I want. But, I also want them to stretch out. I'm anxious to expand though. Everyone seems to be getting along. I went in and checked them all and they are all cuddled up under the roost

Looks like you have ALOT of male ducks- Opie, Jax, three new ones, and how about the calls? You need LOTS more girls. Not just one. Come spring, Sadie and the new girl are going to be overworked. I dont know the ratio needed but someone here does, I am sure. I have 2 male muscovy and five females (okay one female is not a muscovy) and I think that I need one more female to even things out. The new ducks are very cute- what kind are they? I LOVE the picture of Jax and Sadie! Awwww.

I need to drain out my pond and clean it somehow- I really do not want to, but it is GREEN and full of leaves. Nasty. I filled up the swimming pool and the ducks were happy. In the spring, I will buy a good filter for the pond and we will expand it so its bigger. Right now it sounds like too much work. lol.

You cant even tell I raked all the leaves the other day. My tree is STILL holding most of its leaves...waiting for me to rake the yard again. The neighbors trees are almost naked, so my tree is waiting for everyones yards to be done before they drop.

I went on an egg hunt yesterday- I thought MAYBE they were laying somewhere hidden, but nope. Nada. I give up. I have a bunch of freeloaders. I will have to take a picture this week of my 'used-to-be naked' chicken. She looks gorgeous now. I will get that picture and show you all the before and after.

Now that Jax is not here to chase them around, they love scratching around looking for tomatoes in my dead garden. My favorite male muscovy expects me to give him a tomato every time I go outside, but there are no more. He follows me around and looks over at the dead tomato plants and back at me..lol. I feel bad.

Yesterday was a long day at work, today promises to be another. I hope you all have a great day!

there is crowing coming from my coop?

I have three hens.

I THOUGHT i had three hens.

Carmen is an obvious hen. Eggs for two years from her, except this year.

The black naked chicken- hen? I thought so. Perhaps. Yes, I am certain I got eggs from her.

The Frizzle hasnt laid eggs. She has been in the nest box. She has been contemplating brooding a rock behind the tree. She was sold to me as a pullet....

WHO is the rooster? The frizzle? I am so confused.
Actually, I am more than CONFUSED.

Distinct very good crowing...ERRRR ERRR ERR ROOOOOOOO.....three times so far.

I cant have a rooster.
