Do any of you other fogeys remember the horse-drawn milk wagons? I was a horse-crazy 7-year old in Flint and the McDonalds and Sealtest dairies still used horses. I remember the horse knowing the route so well, the milkman didn't really have to drive, but he used a little half-spherical weight to "tie" the horse. This would have been about 1951-52.

We lived on a dairy farm and Sealtest picked up our milk. What really amazes me is that the man who use to bring out gas to fill our outside tank up for the tractors and cars, trucks...etc....he would let me and the neighbor boy down the road ride ON TOP of the gas tank truck!! We were little too because my boy chum moved when he was 10!! It was a thrill...he would drive slow and just take us maybe 1/8 mile down the road and back. Think it was Standard. Holy Cow.. we were watched over by guardian angels I guess. Him too!
I remember the Fig Newton commercials with the pirate and the parrot....Darn tootin I like Fig Newton!

Born in 1950....don't recall horses being used then. My dad had Percheron before I was born...but he had a Old International tractor all during my growing up years on the farm.

great stories michiganders, though there were no milk trucks, I do remember living with great grandma on her farm for a short time. There was milk strait from the cow in a pail for breakfast every morning. I loved that place.

I'm right there with you MrsChickendad! I was born in 7/50; remember the milk truck coming to our home (I'll have to ask my Mom if it was Sealtest) - we moved from that house in Lansing in 1957 and I believe we had the truck stopping by for deliveries until that time - again I'll double ck w/my Mom - she's coming over to spend the week end with us!
Everyone enjoying the snow?? - I'm ready to go home and crawl into bed and pull the covers over my head!

What kind do you want? I am still waiting for a broody hen. I saw in the Highlites this week that someone was selling incubators for $50, used once. I was tempted to call and ask about them but DH reminded me that that was why I got the buff orps last year.

Laura I've been trying to send you a message and they're just not going thru. Could you e-mail me so I can e-mail you? [email protected]

Hi Kay, I sent you an e mail and my phone number. Feel free to call if you want.

When you you went way beyond the ishkabow you had to cross over the Foo Fram Sea in order to get to Boofland. This was back in the day when we were lucky to even have a television set let alone having a 2nd set. My youngest brothers insisted on watching it everyday. I was much to old to watch it and had even outgrown Black Tooth and White Fang.

Mt great-grandparents told me about Mike the Milkman who promptly after duty went to the local tavern, got soundly drunk, had to be helped to the cart and the horse would take him home where wife would take care of both man and mare once arriving.

We had Twin Pines milk delivered!
Our 'milk box' sat on our porch...mmy gramma had a chute off her back door. Us kids used to squeeze through it and get in trouble all the time.
