So here are my baby Orpingtons....hatched by ME!(although I didn't sit on them

) I'm so happy...I had 8 in the incubator...2 not hatched and I haven't removed them yet to find out what is wrong with them...one was questionable on day 18. I got 6...one had major problems and wasn't going to make it...so DH took care of it...which I know in the future I have to be able to do.
So...5 out of 8 I think is decent for a first time newbie at it! I ordered B/B/S orps. Anybody know what color these are?? They have grey/silver with pale yellow. Some are darker than others.
I am getting almost 24 more English-mixed Orpingtons next week--an impulse because the Blue Jerseys still aren't ready and I couldn't let the incubator sit empty for a whole month!! ha ha.
I'm so happy to be back with chickens..haven't had any for a year.
The sky is beautiful pink and red this morning...maybe we won't get snow/rain afterall! Have a good day everyone...thanks for letting me brag like a grandma with her first newborn!

Fife, five certainly is an excellent hatch and you aren't bragging when you post pictures of your birds, you a merely sharing. I wouldn't be willing to hazard a guess as to what color they will be as adults. There are so many variables with birds. I have birds that as chicks have gold heads with black bodies yet as adults they have black heads with gold bodies. The only thing I can tell you with any certainty, after serious study of your picture is that the two chicks in the middle will grow up to be chickens and the two on the ends will as well.

Good mornin' all. I think I have a problem. Maybe someone can help. I have my little broody hen that I gave eggs from Plum Market in AA. I've been hand feeding her but didn't want her to get muscle atrophy so I lifted her off the eggs. I read about Cricket taking her silkie off the eggs and putting her back on. I later found her on the wrong nest and a different chicken on HER nest . I kicked bertha butt off. There was a new lighter egg in there(not bertha's). I took it out. All the while broody is twittering and fluttering and puffed up like a toad. .. so upset. I put her back on her own nest and checked her later. She was on the wrong nest again! Poor little thing is so mixed up. Any ideas? I just wanted to see if they'd hatch but she is confused. Any ideas would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

It's probably best if you could put her in a separate enclosure with just her nest.

thanks for answering so quickly. . I will leave her inside the coop in a dog crate with food etc. She is already so ostracized I don't want it harder for her. This way she will still be hopefully part of the flock. Thanks Opa. I will candle the eggs today. They are so dark and thick shelled. ..hard see into them.

BF wanted to know more about ISA browns and after looking a few things up I told him they were a cross between Rhode Island Reds and Rhode Island Whites. Then he asked why they aren't called Rhode Island Pinks instead.

So we've decided that if we keep that one we'll call her Pinky.
All of the chicks are the same age and only one seems to have a definite comb going (the one I took a pic of) so, maybe 1 in 12 is a rooster.

Our friend doesn't mind roosters and any that give him trouble will end up dinner so I guess it's doesn't matter too much.

In other news, large wet snow flakes just started falling outside.

Why do I keep thinking winter is over?

At that age she wouldn't be able to go through a surgery safely so I would say just give her whatever she wants and keep a close eye on her.
