Opa: Keep that advice rolling in, we'll let you know when you're rambling about unicorns and fairy princesses, but we'll read that too and play along with you.

Splitting the roosters up has settled everyone down considerably and eggs are just rolling in.

I'm guessing/predicting that THIS time your luck will change and you will get 5 out 8 to hatch!!

Are you sure? This is ME we're talking about. Everything I touch dies. Even one of my feed store chicks--at a week old--managed to drown in the waterer.

I know next to nothing about hatching so I hesitate to even guess but I do hope all will go well

Several years back..I almost lost a chick in the waterer too..it was open at the top and I (duh) forgot to put a cover on it. I went out to check on them and it was inside the water bucket floating. It must have JUST happened and I was able to save it. I read recently you can put marbles in the tray part of the waterer so they don't drown...but I thought it would be tough for a chick to drown in 1/8 inch of water?? Unless they fell asleep with their head in it! Your luck will change Michiganwrangler. How's the class enrollment hassle going...all signed up? Classes started? I have no idea anymore when college enrollment is and semesters start/end.

We lost our shed Tuesday afternoon. The cord to the brooder shorted out and started the fire. My daughters three bantam chicks were in the brooder, she was so worried about them that she actually tried to run into the shed to save them while I was on the phone to 911. I clotheslined her in her attempt. We lost all our equipment in the fire and a chickens coop, fortunately my birds free range so we didn't loose any adults and the firemen (my deepest heart felt thank you to the Milford Fire department) saved my duck house from catching (I would have lost two Muscovy ducks sitting on huge clutches due to hatch Friday). I'm just sending this out as a reminder that no matter how safe you think your brooder is please, please be careful. I know many of us keep our brooders in our homes, there are so many things that can go wrong with these and the fire investigator that was here today told me that the hood around the light bulb is not fire proof. The aluminum burns like paper. A ludicrous design!! Please be careful this spring. I don't want anyone's excitement to end in tragedy.

I am so sorry to hear that! I have heard that the heat lights are often the cause of fires. Thanks for sharing your story so the rest of us can learn something.

I just counted the total chicks and adults I have....

Yup, signed up for a summer class that is 6 days, 6 hrs a day (luckily between endurance rides) and my fall class is online so yea! No commuting down to Ypsi!

Now just to get them paid for.

Speaking of endurance rides,

I can't afford one of those fancy horse trailers with living quarters, my horse trailer is a stock trailer with the front half converted into a tack room. So, I pitch a tent in warm buggy weather or sleep in the truck in cold weather. Now that DD wants to do endurance with her pony, I'm looking for a conversion van that we can sleep in. Our truck is only a 1/2 ton so I don't want to put a pickup camper on it while hauling 6000 lbs of horses and trailer and stuff.

I'm going to look at one in Tawas this Sat. It has a tow package on it. Any questions I should be asking? Anything in particular I should look for? It has 52,000 miles on it. What should I be looking for on the brakes and wheels and whatnot?

Thanks
