I nhaven't been on the thread for a few weeks. Benn busy with other things I guess. I have a question. I have 11 laying hens from last spring. They slowed down laying over the winter months. I had they cooped up most all winter. I opened up the coop and added a run a few weeks back. I've back into the routine of letting them out daily now that the weather is noemally in the 40's - 50's during the day. I know they are liking being outdoors again. I've been giving them scratch again as a treat. I add egg shells (baked and ground in the food processer) to their feed every few days. I also have been giving them diluted buttermilk every few days to add protien to their diet......

I've been going to the coop to collect eggs & I've been finding at least one egg broken at the nesting boxes daily. I think that I have a hen that is pecking at the eggs and breaking it. Any ideas on the the cause of this behavior? I didn't have this happening at all last year.

oh Connie!!!!!!! How awful and how scary! I am thankful though that your loss wasnt greater- and OMG! I am glad that you were able to witness and stop your daughter from running in! She must be very upset.

My daughter had the worst seizure she has ever had, yesterday. Full grand mal seizure. She doesnt remember anything but it lasted six minutes according to the paramedics. She was in school. I met them at the e.r. My daughter is epileptic but her seizures are of the 'stare-off' type. So this is new for us.

My mother-in-law was very weak yesterday. Hopefully she will feel stronger today. Yesterday was a step-down from how she was doing the day before. I dont mind two steps forward, one step back- it is much better than one step forward, two steps back.

My female muscovy is walking. Small little slow steps. That is an improvement from not being able to walk at all. Hopefully she too, will do better today.

You all have a wonderful day. Instead of wishing for warmer weather, perhaps we should wish for Snow. That way we can try reverse psychology on Mother Nature.

Oh I almost wish it had exploded in the incubator. I picked it up to candle it and it exploded in my face just as I picked it up to look at it. In my mouth, up my nose, in my eye (it made it under my glasses!!!), all over the carpet, down the wall and on the couch. Aric was sound asleep with both of the doors closed and he heard it explode. He took care of me then cleaned up what he could and threw baking soda all over everything and left it til about an hour ago. Had to throw the towel and my clothes away.

Kim - I didn't know your daughter had seizures. I've had them since I was 3 months old. Mine are 95% under control after a lifetime of trying to find meds that work. Most of my life I would have grand mals 3-7 times a week, sometimes more, especially before and after one of my brain surgeries. I now only have petit mals in my sleep which makes me legal enough to have a driver's license, ride a bike, swim, roller coasters, all the things I couldn't do growing up. My daughter has the petit mals where she stares off and she also has explosive tempers. But she wasn't born with it, it came from being on life support after open heart surgery when she was 5.

I'm glad she's ok!

Any sign of a bad egg I toss it in a ziploc bag and it goes outside in the trash. I hope the rest of your hatch goes well!

I hope everyone going through hardship sees better days. It's sad seeing anything bad happen.... hopefully things get better as the weather warms up.

I've decided I'm 90% sure I'm going to the Imlay City poultry swap tomorrow. I hope to see some of you there.

Jen. Needless to say I did get sick. Have been all day too. I've had a seriously infected tooth for 6 months, maybe more and that rotten egg didn't help the illness at all!!

So I guess it's the wrong time of year to be searching for specific chicks/eggs. I need to increase my numbers since so many didn't make it through the winter. Ugh. I want something we don't have (I hear Aric yelling Jersey Giant lol)...and I'm getting rid of the dumb ass isa browns. Worst chickens I've seen in my life!!! I'm even willing to give up their egg production just to get them out of here!!! lol

We went to get feed today. Is it just me or has the cost sky rocketed in the last couple of weeks? Unbelievable!!!

Yesterday I was asked to post the recipe that I use for making what I feel is the best rice pudding I've ever had. While you could use long grain rice it won't be as creamy. Long grained rice is polished to keep the grains from sticking and that removes all the fine particles that short grain rice has.

Old Fashion Egg Custard Rice Pudding

6 eggs
1 cup sugar
3 cups milk
1 tbs vanilla
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 cups cooked short or medium grain rice
1 cup golden raisins

Blend eggs, sugar, milk, vanilla, salt then add cooked rice and raisins. Pour into buttered 4 qt casserole dish. Place in pan of water and bake in oven for 1 hour 30 minutes. After 45 minutes stir thoroughly and allow to finish baking. Remove from oven and set on cooling rack. Top will be a beautiful golden yellow. Sprinkle with cinnamon and allow to cool slightly before serving warm.

I have found that doubling the recipe is a good idea since a single batch doesn't last very long.

Last night we took this cake as our contribution for dinner and it was a hit so I'm posting it as well. Those of you who know me are aware that I take eating very seriously. We found this recipe in a Southern Living cookbook and it called for a product that is no longer available, frozen fresh coconut. I wasn't happy with how it came out using dehydrated coconut so I started trying to find a good alternative. Finally hit upon the solution. I take a 16oz pkg of coconut and add one can of coconut milk to it. Refrigerating the mixture overnight allows the coconut to rehydrate and I believe the end result is a cake that is better than it was using the frozen coconut.

Coconut-Cream Cheese Pound Cake

1/2 cup butter softened
1/2 cup shortening
1 pkg 8 oz cream cheese softened
3 cups sugar
6 large eggs
3 cups all purpose flour
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 3/4 cups prepared coconut
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 tsp coconut flavoring

Beat butter, shortening, and cream cheese at medium speed with mixture for 2 minutes or until creamy. Gradually add sugar, beating 5 to 7 minutes. Add eggs 1 at a time, beating after each addition just until yellow disappears.

Combine flour, baking soda, and salt; add to butter mixture, beating at low speed just until blended. Stir in coconut, vanilla, and cocnut flavoring.

Pour batter into greased and floured tube pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour and 30 to 40 minutes or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean.

Cool in pan on a wire rack 10 to 15 minutes, remove from pan, dust with powdered sugar and allow to cool.

Oooooo Thank You, Sam! Chickendad and I are enjoying the leftover coconut cake at this very instant! I am also looking forward to trying the rice pudding, as well.
Thanks for posting these!
