My girls are so HOT, put a fan in the coop it freaked some of them out

I sprayed the ground around the coop with water and its soo much cooler in the shade but half of them won't go out and sit in it.. UG...My EE's are the smartest they go under the coop in the deep dark ground...I am going to freeze some 2 liters for them see if they will like that..Worried about my extra fluffy Barred Rocks the most.. ug...I hope it rains tonight we need it here now, went from flood to NOTHING for a few weeks now..

I was toying with the idea of getting a few pheasant chicks to raise and release. Even though I'm in the 'burbs, I'm close enough to Hines Park that they could fly there in a few seconds.

Hillbilly - so sorry to hear about your birds.

I am worried that my girls are hot too. I soaked the ground of their run last night so hopefully they found some cool earth beneath. We also covered the top of the run with a tarp. I like the suggestion about freezing water bottles. I may do that tonight.

OMW home to check on the girls now!

Don't see too many of those in N. Michigan....winters too harsh....but we have seen a couple in the past 8 yrs. we have lived here. Glad you are settled in Stacykins...Michigan is a lovely state . Yesterday I had a scarlet tanager in one of our trees! Beautiful.

There's quite a few pheasants by us. A local 4-H breeds and releases every year.

One moved in with my chickens last winter.

For some reason the picture was the same as the previous post so I thought I had lost this post and rewrote everything

Certainly got warm today, probably could have incubated eggs by just carrying them in your pocket. I checked the birds several times today to make sure they had water. I saw a pumped recirculation waterer system that a quail farmer in Oklahoma uses and I may do some thinking on how I could rig one up for my birds. It would be nice if they had a constant flow of cool water instead of the warm/hot water that is now standing in the waterers.

The cup waterer in my bantam orpington's cage was partially obstructed and as I was trying to fix it the rooster nailed me. I've never seen him so aggressive. I'm glad Hope was there. Once I chased him back into the coop she kept him blocked in until I could repair the waterer.

This heat has got to be brutal on my little bantam broody. She's sticking tight to those eggs. Tonight I must candle them and find out if she has been wasting her time. Today is the 23rd day and something should have been happening by now. It sure will be a shame if all her efforts have been for naught.

came home from work early at around 230 only to find that it was so hot that one of my best english lop does who was heavy with babies (due today) heat stroked and died

My chickens got soaked down with the garden hose and I'm doing hourly or half-hourly checks on anyone outside.

I've got some type of sinus bug that's making it hard for me to breathe in the heat so I have to wait until it cools down a bit more before I can really go out there and work on preparing them for tomorrow. ((sigh))

Thats awful, sorry to hear it.
I keep my chicks in the tractor under some trees on the east side of the house in the a.m. then as the sun moves past the mid-position over head I slowly drag it closer to the shade the house itself is giving off, even then the little things kept mostly inside the cardboard box today.
Gonna be just like this again tomorrow where I am.

Years ago, when I first started dating, I said something to a girl about her sweating. Her mother overhead and haughtily informed me that ladies don't perspire, however they might occasionally glow. Well I'd be willing to bet that on a hot day like today the intense light coming from all them glowing women would endanger a feller's eyesight.
