Good Morning! I am loving this weather. I know it's hot but I wish it could stay this way another month. I just keep thinking in past years our snow was here to stay by the first of October so I'm enjoying it while it's warm - ok hot!! I will be taking it easy today - hurt my back doing too much weeding and tilling in the garden so the rest of the weeds get a reprieve. The chickens have been hot but they just head for the woods for the day and the little ones don't seem to mind. I did see a couple in the kiddie pool yesterday.

I posted on your thread, I'm down and will help out as much as I can. I too, am very busy around this time but I have a folder of articles and stuff I've been collecting around the subject.

IN OTHER NEWS: I SOLD my first 2 dozen eggs this morning in less than 5min!

my hens have done as I feared, they insist on using the nest boxes as roosts at night and keep filling the upper boxes with pooh. I may have to take them down and do something else. Grrrrr

Are they laying? Block the nest boxes with empty milk jugs or what ever you have. Or, when it's dark in the coop, remove them one by one and put them on the roost. Are the roosts higher than the boxes? If not, they need to be.

Good Morning! It's going to another hot one. It sure was a long night. Just could not fall asleep. Finally got up and watched Runaway Bride till 5am. Fell asleep and woke up at 6:60. Went to bed and woke up at 8:30. Something tells me this is not going to be a very productive day.

The two splash orpington pullets I got at chickenstock are doing great. Since the weather has been so warm, I put them out each day in a fenced area. Now, at 6 weeks, they are free ranging with the big girls with no problems. No one is chasing them or picking on them. The last three nights, they have been spending it in the coop. I found the perfect little brooder to put them in for a few nights until they are comfortable being in there... The top of our fire pit! The circular fencing and top are perfect for just the two of em. I'll keep them there for a few days and bring out the saw horse for them to roost on till they feel ready to go on the big girl roost. The easiest introduction I ever had.

Update on my silkie:
Cleaning out the mouth gunk yesterday seems to have helped. She's breathing better and eating the soft food, and she's still alert and active.

Mine to do the same thing except that roost on TOP of the upper nest boxes, covering them with poo. I am going to take them down. In talking to Kathy (who I think is MrsChickendad) she asked me if my boxes were higher than my roosting bars....and they are. Until I take them down, I refuse to fight them on it. I was taking them all off one by one every night but it was such a hassle and they caused such a ruckus I just let them be.

Must be something in the air. I tossed and turned until 4 then woke up at 5:30 and couldn't get back to sleep.
