Fife - That is a complication, for sure. I may be looking for a good roo just for a flock protector/leader ... and lawn/eye candy. How is his temperament? How does he take care of the hens -- does he share treats, call them over for food, etc? Happen to have a picture? Know how much he weighs? My hubby makes his way up there occasionally. We might not be able to make it work right away but may be able to work something out if he heads up there soon-ish and if the roo seems to fit the bill.

Nancy, I tried to send you a pm about the silkies but your inbox is full. I sent you an email. I don't know if you got it. Everyone except me and Theron seems to think they're both roosters. Let me know what you decide about them. I'm assuming you're not going to want to risk it.

Nancy - I tried to send you a pm too but got the inbox is full msg too.

I got some pics, but can't post them til later because I have to take my daughter to her doctor. I found 2. Unfortunately the others combs are either missing or too damaged thanks to the roosters so I wouldn't feel right re-homing them. I knew they were messed up, but I didn't realize how bad til I picked them up. Two are great and very friendly. Like most other chickens, they don't like to be caught, but once they are they are great! One even cuddled under my chin! I'm sure with more one-on-one attention they would be easier to catch. I'm not just saying this, I think you would really like them. Oh and as far as age, they're almost 2 yrs old.

Hey, Michigan friends!

Listen, I have a couple of Jersey Giant cockerels that I am getting ready to put up for sale - I want to offer them to BYC folks first, for FREE. These guys are by a black cock who not only won best of breed & variety, but CHAMPION AMERICAN at the Jersey Giant Nationals last fall. So...yup - awesome bloodlines. Big, big boys!

I have two very nice blues:

This one - not the best pic, but you can see size anyway:

And this nice black:

I'll hang onto them until Wednesday of next week...if anyone's interested, please PM me.

I was so excited to meet yet another BYC-er and her DH today - Nancy & Steve Huston! WHAT lovely folks - GREAT to meet them, and goodness we could have chatted for hours, I think!

ohoh, which is it then, are tomato worms hummingbird moths or Sphinx's. Are BOTH beneficial?? I need to know so I can decide to squish or NOT squish.

I think I'll have to do more Googling---I'm not certain which caterpillars turn into the Hummingbird moths, of which there are a few species.
I'll share pics as I get them. I do believe if it's a huge caterpillar, it's going to be a large, brown moth when it hatches, not a Hummingbird moth.

That's part of the problem...using common names for identifying moths, caterpillars and heck, even plants.
That's also part of the fun...trying to get to the real name. Sort of an Insect: CSI.

I'm pretty much a plant geek but I like to see the caterpillars on my plants even if they are eating some. I planted enough that I can share. More importantly (in my mind) is that if I have a healthy ecosystem going, I can tolerate a few pest bugs. I know that if my habitat is healthy, I'll have far more beneficial insects than problem bugs.

I've had no problem with pests since I stopped using pesticides. No fleas, no ticks, no mosquitos, flies are minimal and invasive weeds are rare. The only thing I find problematic is the slugs on the front porch. If I could let the chickens out front, that issue would disappear.

Stepping down from my soapbox now...
