Ok you guys, while you are on the subject of poo I have a question that may seem to be real silly. Do chickens pee, go ahead and laugh!! The reason I'm asking is because I've noticed a few wets spots in the shavings under their roost in the coop that look likes water. My coop is brand new, custom built by my DH and does not leak. I have not closely inspected it but intend to. I'm realitivity new to raising chickens although I was raised being around chickens my whole childhood. So if someone could answer my silly question after they are done laughing I'd appreciate it.

The BSL is probably 2-3 years old. Based on his spurs and legs he is no spring chicken. This can actually be a plus in selling him though as by that age usually their true colors have come out whereas with a roo that is several months, rather than years, a lot of times aggression will crop up later.

Thanks for the info! Yeah his spurs are pretty outrageous! I knew he wasn't really young. For a rooster that spent his life free ranged, he does pretty well being caught to be put outside every day! I really wish I could keep him but I can't afford to buy anymore supplies to build him his own run.

he he he, their excrement comes out kinda together sometimes it is firmer sometimes it is watery. My meat birds have very watery poo all the time PEE UUUU! It is all just poo!

The other Jersey I got at the same time, was always up running around, craned her neck looking around and curious about everything, but not the one that died. She often sat still and seemed to not notice life going on around her. I'll miss her.

The way I understand it, their pee, pooh and eggs all open into the area called the Cloaca (sp?) so it would mix together and make any pooh seem watery, and also soil the eggs. My eggs and usually pretty clean looking, but I do give them a wash off before putting in the carton in the fridge. In case I give them away to someone.

I'm sorry you lost your chick. I lost my first bird last night to a predator, one of my silkies. All we found were feathers and one of her feet. The smaller one managed to squeeze out through the chain-link (it's in the house now). The Isas were unscathed. I don't know what it was but knowing it would be back I got to work. I made a platform for my daughter's plastic playhouse, covered the windows with hardware cloth, and installed a lock. I also put up a security camera with night vision so I can keep an eye out. I feel so guilty. I should have protected her better. I'm just glad it only got one. It could've been so much worse. Luckily I had already made a little house for the ducklings to sleep in so I didn't have to worry about them. I finished the whole thing up just as my husband was getting home from work. No waiting for a man to help me. I didn't have time to wait. My girls needed me.

Aww man that's awful!! Our neighbor said he's seen coons in his garden which is about 20 feet directly behind the chicken run.

we've never had a problem with critters near our runs or coops, but I know there's a first time for everything. I told Tom (our neighbor) to set traps but his are too old and don't work anymore. Our runs and coops are surrounded by trees and two houses and the barn so we are at least safe from anything that can fly in.

Good Morning everyone,

I havent been around for a few days- cant really catch up on the boards- my eyes are swollen, makes for hard reading.

Prayers for all who need them, and best wishes and congrats to those who need that. I have suffered a big family crisis/heartbreak with my baby brother. The pain is still too raw to talk about- but I will at some point, pick up whats left of my heart and carry on. I have no choice.

Im still looking for chicks to stick under these broodies. Its almost like I dont have chickens- my three grown hens have been hiding for so long.
Its Nascar this weekend. My husband and I go every year- and every year I say Im not doing this again. Its a good time, but its hot, crowded, and alot of walking.
