Congrats on the eggs and welcome to the thread!! Chickens don't care where they live as they have the bare necessities.

I have sand in the run, not the coop. I use pine shavings in the coop and nest boxes. I don't really care to do the deep litter method but depending on the weather in winter sometimes I don't have a choice. I also sprinkle DE in with the pine shavings.

I have pine in the coop too... I was just wanting to know if anyone had the sand in the coop. There is a whole thread devoted to using the sand in the chicken coop, but no one would answer my question on that thread. I think I will just stick with pine shaves. Atleast I can turn it into my gardens come fall and again in the spring.

I'd stick to pine shavings. So easy to clean out, absorbent and coop smells good. I think sand inside would be a mess and difficult to clean. Plus I'd be afraid of ants when the weather is hot & dry. Out side would be OK....but them I'd fear the ants. Just my thoughts.

from what that thread was saying, is you clean it just like you would your little box. Just as some sweet pdz and/or DE. I be more worried about the cold, not helping to generate any heat like the pine would do... I am just going to stick with pine. Maybe I'll try it in the chick coop next year, so its a small scale testing, not in my big coop..

I use pine pellets in mine. I like them way better than shavings. I think they are cheaper in the long run because they last longer. As for the sand, I wouldn't know but I do think it might be cold in the winter.

I was looking at the pine pellets, and thought "what if my pea brains eat them?" so I didn't get them... The lady at TSC wasn't helpful when I asked her about it, well she was, but I don't have horses, so she wasn't... LOL.

OK, my Buffy laid her first egg yesterday. Well today she's been constantly laying down/squatting in position... she will get up and walk around a bit, then lay right back down in position, eating and drinking no problem, but no more eggs. I put her in her nest box, I thought maybe she's was getting bothered because Jace keeps getting in the coop to see if she's left another egg yet... I do not know if she has one stuck, I don't know if I should check just yet, or how to check, but am going to look that up... But when she gets up to walk a bit, she's takes kinda short steps, hasn't run, and when I went to feed them left over spaghetti noodles (plain) she walked over, and laid back down and ate that way... What ya think?

Well you are definitely part of THIS group! I love the song! Thank you for translating, I'm not fluent in chicken yet. There are so many different dialects to learn: Easter Egger, Rhode Island Red, Silkie, Black Copper Marans, Barred Rock, Leghorn, Australorp, etc. I have several EE's/Americaunas who make so much noise when they're laying you would think a fox was in the coop. Now whenever I listen to them I know what they're saying and will sing along!
