I know some people do it with ringneck pheasant to stock as game. They build huge flight pens for them and when they are old enough set them loose. This is after growing them up to maturity, I think. I personally think if someone wants to raise a species for release like that, it should be a native one. Ringnecks are not. Bobwhite quail are. I don't know if in MI you need special permits to posses wild turkeys, which would be the only releasable kind that can fend for itself.

If I were to try this, it would be a native bird.
I'll have to do some research to see what the legalities are.

Is anyone is Southern Michigan running an incubator with eggs due to hatch in the next few days? AND willing to part with 2 of the eggs/chicks?

I have a broody hen who has been sitting on eggs for 23 days now. I think the eggs are NOT fertile. Evidently our rooster is not getting to everyone. We put 3 eggs under her to start with. During the 1st week, one somehow got kicked out of the nest. It had a small crack and I saw blood when I cracked it open. It looks like that was the only fertile egg, because nothing is happening with the other 2. It's going to be hard to break her broodiness, so if I can find some chicks fresh out of the incubator, I will put them under her at night so they can bond to each other. To improve the likelihood of bonding, I would want to pick them up the evening they are hatched so I can put them under her as soon as I get them home.

I don't want many; our flock is already too big. Two would probably be good. I'm not picky about breed; but our flock is all full size, so no bantams please. I'm located near Chelsea, MI, about midway between Ann Arbor and Jackson. I'm willing to drive, but I probably want to keep it down to 1/2 hour or 45 minutes so there is no difficulty keeping them warm during transport.

I'm willing to pay for the chicks. They will get a good home. We have 18 acres and our flock free-ranges on about 2 acres that we have fenced for them. Lots of opportunity for greens and bugs. We feed them organic feed and they get lots of organic kitchen scraps.

Can anyone help my broody hen?

I think it is illegal to raise wild mallards and the domestic mallards don't fly away in the Fall, so you are required to provide safe housing for the domestic mallards all year round.

M.sue :

I think I'm gonna give my broody another day, possibly two, before I actually try breaking her of this broodiness with the so called "Chicken Jail". Tonight my son took her of the box, placed her in the run and she acted like she couldn't decide what to do. He them walked he over to alfalfa field where the others were free ranging and let her mingle and scourge about. When the flock decided to move she followed. I was gone and I don't know how long she was out and my son couln't say how long. When I got home they were all near the coop and she's inside in the box. I brought her back out & let her snack with the others and when she was finished.....right back she went. Upon lock down I put her on the roost....right back again. Pulling her in & out seems somewhat time consuming but maybe if I can get her to free range long enough with the others, maybe she won't have to go to jail!

That is just what I do. Distraction, treats and keeping all the eggs and golf balls up.

Welcome deborah!

Hopefully someone will be able to help you out. I did see in the recent ad for Family Farm and Home that they have their fall shipment of chicks in so maybe that is an option?

Hi Deborah,, if you can't break her I had one sit till she got a hatch this summer, after 23 days non hatched so I put fresh eggs under her and 1 of those hatched. don't know why the others didn't hatch but she sat on those a good 3days after the first hatched They all had starts in them but stopped developing at some point. Not a good year for broody hens here.

Hello everyone-

So hard to catch up with everyone. Hope all is well.

Let me do a quick synopse of what I have read...

sorry for the hen-murder by dog. I had a weiner dog- everyone that was around when I posted my tears on this board knows...wow. She killed and she killed quick, and many many birds in the time you could get up out of your seat and get to either the back bedroom or the back of the house. She was so small, she could fit in the smallest cracks- AND then in through the pop-hole of the coop.. she killed for the sport of killing. I lost many many birds many times, to pure slaughter. Finally, my husband said- how many times are you going to cry over what she has done before you decide to cry just once and get rid of the dog? And, after she killed my silkie and her little babies, I was done.
I did my best, but I was unable to provide a safe home for my chickens- someone always forgot to shut the gate, or shut the fence tight enough..etc. My heart goes out to you that love a chicken-killer.

I miss Opa. I sure hope he can post soon.

Broody questions- those with broodies...I have three broodies that have been broody since right after Chicken Stock in June. Nonstop sitting. No babies for them. I feel like crud, but I have been unable to find any just hatched babies for them. I wish someone had some- I would love to stick some babies under these girls and give them something to do. Its like i do not have chickens at all.

I still have my little Turken cockerel. I wish I knew someone that wanted him. I will even have to let him go with his side-kick, the silkie/cochin cross pullet. They are inseperable.

I have the three geese..I mean, braying donkey poop machines.

love them.
I wish i could get them certified therapy animals for me. What I really wish is that I could have the Mayor understand that my baby brother never wants to speak to me or my mom again, and has cut me off from seeing my nephew and neice and HIM, and that I live in a world of depression and Henry and Penelope and Spare Henri give me joy and peace and I get solitude out there with them...and I wish we could be granted immunity. That I NEED them. However, I dont see that happening..so we continue to live in fear that my new neighbors in the back will have an issue with them. I have NOT seen the neighbors since the grape vine incident...the house is really destroyed so it will be some time before anyone is living there. So until then, waiting for the other shoe to drop...

Did I mention that I really miss Sam/Opa? He really has a great way of putting things into perspective and his own spin on things, doesnt he?

Chickendales?? How far away are you? And how old are your showgirls? I will be willing to drive somewhat...
