Everything you could want to know except how much it costs to get in, which I'd like to know.

My daughter lives about 8 minutes from the Expo Center and it might be fun to go.

Cost to walk into the building and spend the day looking around: zero. We would appreciate it if maybe you bought a hot dog or raffle ticket while you were there.

I could definately put away a hot dog or two:) Will there be birds for sale as well or is this just a show? I plan on coming either way.

Thanks for the reality check...I figure my first egg cost me $1669.37.
Maybe I should start raising unicorns, maybe then I could make a profit.

In the command line at the bottom of my computer the current temperature is flashing 39. So the cup of hot coffee not only tastes good, its necessary to help keep my hands warm. It certainly seems like winter wants to come early this year. I still have blossoms on the pepper plants as well as numerous developing peppers and weather like this is going to end the garden for this year. The only other thing that remains in the garden is butternut squash and cold weather is a plus for them to set the sugar content. I think that since it is supposed to be even colder tomorrow I will be pulling them and turning the garden over to the chickens.

It really should be illegal for spring to show up a month late and winter to come a month early in a region that only gets a few months of warm weather to begin with.

A little funny related to the cold nights though; the other night I was sitting on the sofa with DH when I remembered it was supposed to get cold. I've got a rosemary plant in a pot on the deck and was hoping to overwinter it in the house. We also have a freezer lamb whose name is Rosemary who will be with us until the end of October. I said "Oh! Honey? Will you please bring my Rosemary in for the night? It might frost." The look on the man's face was priceless; or I should say looks. He went through a whole range of emotions. Appalled, vehemently opposed, thinking his wife was crazy, and finally, confusion. Took me a minute to realize he thought I was asking him to bring the lamb in the house for the night.

Good morning michigan. 42 degrees here this morning with lake effect showers - brrr. I am hoping to get a few more tomatoes to ripen.

We sell eggs for $2 a dozen. I consider this more a deficit reduction program, as paying for my coop alone would take 20 years. I am just happy to have fresh eggs from happy hens that are given no medications or chemicals.

Not at all because I haven't really made my mind up. I was thinking around $2.50. The eggs I saw in the store where priced almost @ $3. and were large. Plus just from talking to people who have purchased brown eggs from time to time in the past said they'd pay 2.50 just knowing the facts...where they came from, how they were fed & cared for, etc... DO you sell yours or are they for your own use?

I meant the numbers for your production costs. You said you'd considered all that and come out below store price. I'm curious what your numbers for the conclusion are. What flock size, breeds, average egg production per hen over her life, what line items did you use in the calculation, the final math, etc? If you don't mind.

Yes, I sell eggs, both by the dozen and as a component of our CSA shares.

Good morning, like I said, I WAS FIGURING that all into the cost and I don't think or believe I said I came out below store price. Below store price would be a competitive selling point that would be nice to use. I don't have an exact formula figured out yet but I am taking into consideration the cost to feed: daily/weekly/ monthly, the size of my flock (which is small), the approx. egg count daily/ weekly/ monthly, cost of cartons, care/upkeep, etc.... I did find a formula that I was gonna go by but can't find the site. It was through a university and I didn't put it into my favorites...urghhhh. While this all is basically for fun and to share the experience with my family, I definitely don't want to be giving the eggs away for free because in the long run it does cost a price to have chickens weather you have 6, 60, or 200.

My apologies M. Sue. I must have misunderstood what you were implying when you responded to me.

You said you were going to price your eggs below store cost:

M.Sue :

I was thinking go below store price.

And then in response to me saying:

(Which was tongue in cheek, I hope the smiley accurately portrayed that, btw.)

Oh don't worry you won't have to do that that to me. I was figuring that all into the price!!

I took that to mean you had figured your costs and come out below store price. Which I then thought you confirmed when you said you'd be pricing at $2.50 but had seen most eggs in the store priced at $3. I was just curious what numbers you'd used to come out with the price you did. I must have misunderstood what you meant when you replied to me though.

No problem, it was late at night. Figuring this all out can be a be mind boggling. Anyway, I want to have fun doing it plus have a little fun money!

I sell my eggs at my home for $2 and if I take them to the farmers market for $3 (sold out every day except 3 this summer). I gave up figuring the cost, my husband said I need to charge $100 to have them pay for themselves.

I am not liking this cold weather. We are getting ready to host a bow shoot at our home next weekend and I am supposed to be setting up targets. Last night my husband and son did some practice. After just a few shots I was done, I was not dressed for how cold it was out. I spent the day staying warm inside with a batch of Apple butter and Tomato Basil Jam. Today's project is Pumpkin Butter and maybe some more Tomato Basil jam.
