Anybody want a broody hen.... or 15? At least half of my layers have decided that brooding is The style this year and have boycotted laying. Which, I appreciate, I do need a few good chick rearers in the group, but I also need EGGS. Slackers, anyway.

well it WOULD be nice to make PROFIT, but my friends and family don't see eye to eye with you. They all think everything I do should come to them free, my garden produce, my crafts, I crochet, carve, photography, beading jewelry.
At least I can expect something back from total strangers, like enough to barely help with the cost of feed.
Seriously, when I want to put something up for winter, I have to go to a farm market and buy it cause I don't get nothing out of my garden except a backache and a sunburn. Wish other people saw it that way.

People treat you the way you allow yourself to be treated. If you allow them to take advantage of your work and production for free or very little why would they pay you well? Prices also attract your clientele. Price yourself low, you will attract a low-paying clientele. You cannot wait for the world to decide you are worth what you believe you are worth, you must ask the price for yourself. No one else is going to do it for you. Value yourself first, others will follow suit.

You are absolutely right. I remember learning the 4 important P's from my business classes (decade ago) and they all must tie into together in order for one to be a success which equals Profit......Product, People, Place & Price!! There is alot to think about when it comes to marketing. Like I said be before I want to do this for fun yet make a little fun money while I'm at it. My grandfather is probably nodding his head at me from above because he took his egg business seriously but had fun doing it!! lol

P.S. Sometimes too much fun!!

Ok while were talking selling eggs, where does everybody get their cartons from? TSC, Wholesaler, online, custom made/designed, family & friends? Currently friends & family are supplying me (old ones from the store) with mine but I'd really like to put my own logo on them and have the kids help design one. Any reasonable sites to deal with? I'm very creative and can design my own labels just need to find cartons.

eggcartons.com

But if you're not using a lot of them you'd probably come out ahead to buy the generic ones at TSC and add a stamp or sticker with your information on it -- especially if you're selling to people that you know well and are likely to return your cartons.

ETA: TSC puts their cartons on sale in the spring when they have chicks. You could stock up and save money.

One Dozen Girls does labels, custom. I've been working on my own idea to send her.

Please excuse me while I squeal like a little girl, weeeeeeehhhh.
Sorry, I found 2 more eggs in the nest box. Looks like my BSL is going to be a one-a-day girl and early in the morning.

I didn't get to check yesterday due to long day at Matthaei and school, so I'm assuming that she layed one yesterday and one this morning. But it could be the 2nd BSL who looks nearly as mature as the first. The 3rd BSL doesn't have much of a comb or wattles yet so I think she is a little less mature.

The 2 BO's are also a little less developed in the comb/wattle department as well.

Hmm, maybe they should have names instead of BSL 1,2,3 and BO a&b.

Anyway, I just had to share with people who understand the mania of a backyard chicken owner. I told the kids at school about the eggs and they looked at me like I was wierd or something. But then again they are all 20-30 years younger than me

and already think I'm strange.

Have a great day folks, I gotta get busy around here. Now that my chickens are working, I better as well.

Busy morning. Let my chickens out to free range and then over to Krisrose's to let her chickens out in her huge chicken yard. Coming out of my coop after cleaning, I saw a hawk swooping around Krisrose's yard! Started running to her house and that darn hawk swooped my way. So, here I am running around trying to see what direction it went, to no avail. Now, I'm trying to get my chickens back into their run. Chased into the yard, and darn it, forgot the back gate. So, all the chickens are escaping out of the back gate. Herd them all in, and, how did the front gate get open? Now, chase them back into the yard and into the run. Run over to Kristin's house and chase her chickens into their run, chase turkeys out. No, you chickens stay in. Oh my. Luckily, the crows were keeping the hawk busy while I was doing all this. Thank you, crows! Got my exercise in for today. Didn't look like a red tail hawk. That's what usually hangs around. Have to go and look up and see if I can identify it.
Sure is chilly out there!! Not liking it, at all. Too soon! Hope everyone has a good day.

LESSON FOR TODAY, the school of ChicwannaB is now in session:
92936_dscf4690.jpg

DO NOT MICROWAVE AN EGG IN THE SHELL even if it's badly cracked.
I had just gathered it, washed it in the sink and laid it on the dishdrainer board. It rolled of and into the sink....Crrrrack! Not bad enough to be leaking, so I thought I'd try microwaving it, don't try this at home.
Okay, school is over. Take it from me and DON"T TAKE IT FROM ME.
I R Stoopud!!
