Interesting. I looked it up and the ones up here are, in fact, supposed to be migratory.

I wonder why they stick around here? We've always have them around year round so I just assumed that was normal. Apparently not. This winter I'll have to pay closer attention to see how many hang around all year.

Yep, turkey vultures (Cathartes aura) are migratory as are the Canada goose (Branta canadensis). They are protected by the federal migratory bird act.

Just because the Feds say that these birds migrate doesn't mean that it's 100% true. Many will stay here year round if they have food and shelter.

But if you want a fun weekend, visit Hinckley, Ohio for the buzzard festival in the spring. They celebrate the return of the buzzard in a big, fun way. Of course, Ohioans don't need much of an excuse for drinking in the streets.

I have been wondering why I only have been seeing only one of my neighbor's guinea hens lately, usually the two of them come by every day to freeload a handful of birdseed or scratch. Well, I found the other one sitting on a nest with 13 eggs under the huge purple coneflower plant in the garden along the back of my house. Don't know for sure when she started sitting, but probably a few weeks ago. He is going to come get the eggs and put them in an incubator, as the temps here have started dropping below freezing at night and the adult birds are free roaming. It was fun finding that nest!

I have a question for you all.
I have a broody bantam d'uccle hen.
BROODY.

I have two 10 day old Isa Brown chicks who are bopping around inside the house.
Any chance I can put them under her at night still?
My guess is they would run away from her........not sure what the hen would do.
Has anyone tried it?

Chicken Grandma -- Keep an eye out at first to make sure all three assimilate to the idea well but, yes, you can absolutely give her the chicks. And they shouldn't run from her at all. They're very smart little things and will probably gravitate to her. I've put many chicks under broodies and I don't even bother putting them UNDER the broody, I just turn them loose in the coop and they run right to her. It's amazing to watch.

Blueberry is such a good momma and the chickes are a fiesty bunch. Its fun to watch them peak out from under her freathers. I love it!
