So sorry to hear about your losses.

Dogs do seem to help keep predators away, my dogs aren't even outside all the time, but it's rare that I see any predators near the house or the coop anymore, even the woodchucks that lived on the outskirts of our yard have packed up and headed off.

The deer, however, don't seem to have a problem wandering right up to the house, but I don't mind them. All bow season my husband has spent all his free time out back waiting and watching, and yet, while he's at work I have seen three outside my kitchen window, not 100 feet from the house. Go figure!

NovaAman and chickendales - You both have some beautiful roosters! I have just recently begun to appreciate how adorable Silkies are.

Until BYC, I don't think I had ever even seen one!

The three that I rehomed to a breeder here were his brothers. Two of them had the silver and one the gold just like him. I had to keep this guy tho. I have had peace with out them all. No fights now. It was kinda funny to watch, cuz they never managed to actually get each other, but sooner or later they would have. But yeah, they could be twins! Mine is only 6 months old weighs about 3 pounds maybe a bit more.

That is a beautiful little silkie!
I don't think you can be too paranoid about a light or heat lamp. Make sure there is no tephlon (teflon?) in the light. I know that sounds weird but sometimes they use tephlon to make the light more shatterproof. But hot tephlon gives off a gas that causes hemmorage in the lungs of birds. So it is good to be careful what kind of lights we put in our coops. Read the entire box and look for lights specifically for animals.

Chickendales - lovely Silkie also!
Snowflake - I am so sorry about your losses. I hope tomorrow is a more peaceful day. I met Wyatt at the p.o. today and told him I knew you! Thank goodness for BYC's!

No doubt about it, winter is on it's way. Still have lots to do before it gets here. The electric fence needs to be taken down and stored, The bantam coop needs to be moved to a leeward location, both runs need to be covered and enclosed. Sunflowers need to be pulled and moved next to the bird feeder so Granny can watch the cardinals feeding. Christmas lights need to go up while it's still warm enough that my fingers won't fall off while installing them. I need to get out to the farm I hunt on to work on my deer blind.

Wait a minute, this list is starting to get out of control. I want to go fishing again not work, I'm supposed to be retired and this list is starting to sound like a lot of work.

I hear that. I've been more of a grasshopper than ant. So the chore list is being set on fire for warmth.

Chickens have been over-nighting in the garage coop even though it's not finished yet. Last night they all roosted on the metal track for the big door and pooped all over my wet saw. My fault for not having the new roost boards up yet.

Looks like it's going to be a sunny day so I can pull stuff out of the garage and get it organized...maybe? Anyone want to help?

Egg song from one of the girls is full volume. I can hear her from here in the kitchen.

Yes chore duty is in full effect today! I am going to do one major clean of the coop before it gets too cold, lay hay and cover the run, and place my heated dog bowls in the coop (unplugged). My DH covered all the vents last night which is good since we had a freeze last night.

I had to take one of the silkies (Mavis) to the salon this morning. She had terrible poopy butt. AND ONE of my girls is giving me monster eggs. Not like the one I got the other day but definately XL and larger. All of them laid on the floor. I can just picture her pacing the coop trying to lay these things. Sheesh! It's happened 3 days in a row now.

I hope everyone has a great day!
