Raz, think little guy is still a teenager, no sign of interest in the girls yet (he is in my laying pen with 18 girls, large and small). So far I have only seen one little blue egg.
Saw your post about the nest boxes, it may be that if you add a few into their new area and after they are used to it keep them in for a day they will use the new box (es) without a problem. My hens usually only use 2 of the 3 available boxes, but there is a lot of foot traffic and an occasional egg in the other.

I've been given the ok by Aric to plant a few apple trees. We definitely want spys. Just not sure where to find them inexpensively..or at all. Aric makes pies and I can apple sauce and spiced apples and spys are great for that. Maybe if we can get enough trees at a good deal, we'll plant several and make apple cider next year! I'm amazed at how many people have apple trees but don't use the apples, but ask them if we can use the apples they act like we're asking to steal their gold!!

I've always been very pleased with the quality of the stock and service at Van Atta's , just off 69. I wouldn't say they're inexpensive, but like you were saying the other day about the eggs, you get what you pay for. Not only have I never had a problem with disease or death with Van Atta's plants, their fruit trees are vigorous and seem to take right off as soon as you plant them.

I was being a little bit snarky and a little bit questioning. The BSLs seem to love that cardboard nest box and the bigger Buffs have been curious about it, but haven't figured out how to turn around or back into it yet.
With the new bigger coop, I've provided a couple of different nest boxes and I figurte that they will make up their own minds of where to go. My main question was will they stop laying while they figure out where they want to lay. I suppose that I should have worded it better.

My neighbor has an apple and a pear tree. He uses them for feeding his rabbits and chickens. I don't think they ate a single one. LOL. I think they are only 3 yrs old though, so i guess I can understand. He says 2 more season and then they'll eat them.

NovaAman - Yeah this neuropathy has to be really watched. I wear the ugly orthopedic shoes ALL the time that have orthotics in them. I had bones break in my feet because of the neuropathy (Charcot Foot). My shoes also have a steel shank in them to prevent the foot from bending when I walk. I still got broken bones even with all of this! Because of all the numbness, I feel unsteady on my feet and look at the ground ALL the time when I'm walking just to see where I'm walking. I have to be careful walking around our property. Lots of holes between the dog and the birds! I do keep a close eye on them daily and see a podiatrist on a regular basis. You can understand why my poor husband has ended up doing all of the "bird chores", especially in the winter.

Thanks RaZ. I"m a bit bummed at the moment and I needed a bit of a laugh. I can so see this.

Why am I bummed? Today I was reminded repeatedly that no matter how hard I try, every second of every day I am that much closer to being just like my mother.

I love my mother, but I'm just not ready to go there yet.

Anyway, I wanted to tell everyone about my trip to IHOP this morning. Me and DH went after his doctor appointment and I ordered my eggs over easy. When I got them, I was like this isn't right. The yolks were really watery and the palest yellow.

I looked at DH and said our eggs look better even on their worst days. Really makes you appreciate the wonderful eggs our birds give us every day.

I see everyone's talking about apple trees. We were thinking of getting some, but haven't yet. Maybe next year as well as blueberry and raspberry bushes. We have a cherry tree which did really well this year so between us and the chickens it got picked clean.

That said, nice photos everyone from the yummy dinner to the handsome roos and the non-chickens.
