Dark legs, rumpless, tuftless - looks like an araucana. But ask stacykins, she breeds them.

rlipinski, do you know any Klumps? Anne was one of my best friends in college, but I have lost track of her over the years. I remember well the nights we spent at St Micheals fest, and the pickle (linwod), corn (auburn) and potato (munger) fests. And days at the beaches at Tawas and caseville.

She has all the traits as one except she is missing the cheek muffs.

There are non-tufted Araucanas.

I have no idea. The guy that gave her to me has no idea. He says just a chicken lol. She has no muffs

I agree with Nova, could be an araucana because she has no tail. Not sure if there are other tailless breeds or not and I believe some of them don't have muffs.

OK, thanks for the insight on heat lamps. I'm hearing more against than for, so tomorrow I'll unplug mine. Especially noted was Olive's info about frostbite as I am worried about Joe's comb. I also remember Olive mentioning, as did Mutt, that if they get used to warmer temps and then have to do without due to power outage, they will surely suffer then. My coop is nice and snug with no drafts at all, so I'm sure they will be OK. I have never thought that warmer temps would keep them laying, but I do have a light on a timer that comes on at 5:45 a.m. and goes off at 7:00 a.m., so I'm assuming that's why I'm still getting a few more eggs than normal.
Welcome RLipinski10! The MI thread is great, lots of friendly and VERY smart people here! Glad to have you!

I'm amazed by you folks who can look at a picture and tell what breed it is. Certainly a tribute to your experience and the willingness to share your knowledge.

I am also happy to see that this group can ask questions and offer opinions without the flames that I see on some other threads. It's no wonder that we get 4 or 5 pages a day to read.

A couple of things on this. First EEs are a hybrid. You don't breed EEs to EEs and get more EEs. Hybrids do not breed true. If you want to create EEs then you need pure Ameraucanas or Araucanas which you would then cross with a light brown egg laying breed. The resultant F1 offspring would be EEs. I'm not sure if that's what you were meaning or not, but thought clarification would be good if nothing else for others reading who may be wondering.

Second is that the very act of treating your roos as "lap buddies" increases your odds of having aggressive roosters. Raising them like your female chickens is a bad idea. Roosters with a healthy fear and respect of humans are far less likely to challenge your dominance than those who are intimately familiar with being in your immediate physical vicinity and who view you as one of the flock. Don't coddle your cockerels and you'll have much higher rates of success.

Some very important points here on heating.

Another thing I would like to remind everyone of is that heating increases, rather than decreases the likelihood of frostbite. I know it was mentioned in passing that some are heating for fear of frostbite, but that is very much counterproductive. The temperature range right around freezing is the danger zone for frostbite for chickens because that temperature range fosters moisture which is a much bigger factor in frostbite than temperature itself.

What i have read confirms this; the one that turned cannibal was the one that i didn't tame though! My other guy is ok, but i went through a lot of trouble to get him this way. I think i need to "hybridize" with something that I can at least be fairly sure is gentle. If not with me, than at least the ladies! If what i read is true, my girls from my 2 favorites will be black and white and the boys brown and white; i want to cross the girls with something lavendar. I wouldn't even care if it were bantam, if he could do the job

I was checking out the Breed page trying to decide what breeds I want next and I noticed a link at the bottom of the page that read Personal Egg Banking Give Yourself Time - Freeze Your Eggs www.givf.com. I thought "wow! I didn't know you could freeze eggs! I figured they would explode!" I was going to give all of you some new and exciting information on a new way to freeze eggs! I didn't get the Personal part, but I figured Egg Banking Give Yourself Time, you know put your eggs in the freezer and you can use them later when you have time! What an idiot, what a dufus!
