I use the shredede news paper and lots of
junk mail too in bedding forthe chickens. Sometimes (usually) i mix it with wood shavings , sometimes with oak and maple leaves. I notice no offensive odor from the paper. Don't use shiney paper. I don't shred the envelopes with transparent windows to protect addresses. Never read anything about those but the material just does not seem like something that should be eaten. Makes for great mulch in the garden / yard too.

Nova , You got lots of good advice for treating your injured hen, sweems to me. I'm so sorry she passed. You should not blame yourself for not preventing it. Stuff happens. bob

Thanks for the great recipe RaZ!

I'm going to try it tomorrow!

Nova - I'm so sorry about your hen. I think I understood that you don't really have a run for your chickens, they just free range all the time if they're not in the coop. I know it was your own dogs that got her, but I would sure be concerned about any strays who happen to walk by your house and see them out, or is your yard fenced? If you could put up some kind of run for them they would be much safer. I'm really sorry for Jace too. Maybe you shouldn't make him eat his rooster, just tell him he went to Rooster heaven? He is an adorable little guy. Life lessons can be tough.

Nova, so sorry about your hen.
Laura, I'm so glad your surgery went ok. Now, be careful on those stairs. Hope the biopsy comes back clean.
Very cold today. Chickens didn't come out much today, neither did I. Went out for pizza with Krisrose and I bugged our favorite waitress to box up a couple of other tables's leftover salads for the chickens.

Wow, lots today.

Mom - glad your ok. Don't worry about being in the Christmas spirit... it's not Christmas yet. Maybe you need to try a little baking RaZ's way.

RaZ - I read it thinking it was a real recipe.

Nova - so sorry for you and your girl. Nothing makes it any easier.

I had two button quail eggs today! My chickens don't seem to mind the cold. They were out running around the yard today. I was going to let them free range but my son spotted a hawk in a tree, so they were stuck inside. It is supposed to hit 40 tomorrow:D

Night all.

I agree dianaross77. My 16 year old grandson just got his license and it scares me to death.

I have a 17yr old and a 16yr old. Neither one has a license or has been through driver's training. It may seem odd to most people, but personally, I would feel horrible if something happened while they were driving if I let them start doing it before I thought they were mature enough and ready. Once I feel they are, then they will.

Nova- I'm so sorry about your girl. I have leghorns, too, and like their personalities quite a bit and would be sad to lose one.

I just want to remind you all that you are all such a fantastic group of friends and I am so thankful to be a part of this group...the Michigan group. Seems that others can be so harsh in other threads - and I am grateful that WE are so nice here!

So I found out today I'm a grandma, so to speak. I had 2 OEGB bantams roos that I gave to a co-worker in August. She used to have roos, but decided to process them prior to taking mine. Well, I guess her kids found one of her wyandottes with 3 baby chicks the other day. Doing the math, they are obviously offspring of one of my boys, so just call me grandma.

It was quite something to hear her story about it. I guess this shows my newbie chicken status, but I didn't realize bantams and SS birds would produce chicks. She said she thought she wouldn't have a chick issue either, but looks like we were wrong.

Curious as to what size the chicks will be. Will they be bantam size, SS, or in between?
Anyway, as neat as I thought this all was, she went on to tell me that they lost a chick, unfortunately. She thinks being exposed to the cold, plus maybe he was a weak one, was too much for the little guy. She tried to save him, but it was too late. She has the other two and momma in a smaller coop set-up with a brooding lamp, so hopefully, they make it through all this cold.
