So I found out today I'm a grandma, so to speak. I had 2 OEGB bantams roos that I gave to a co-worker in August. She used to have roos, but decided to process them prior to taking mine. Well, I guess her kids found one of her wyandottes with 3 baby chicks the other day. Doing the math, they are obviously offspring of one of my boys, so just call me grandma.
It was quite something to hear her story about it. I guess this shows my newbie chicken status, but I didn't realize bantams and SS birds would produce chicks. She said she thought she wouldn't have a chick issue either, but looks like we were wrong.
Curious as to what size the chicks will be. Will they be bantam size, SS, or in between?
Anyway, as neat as I thought this all was, she went on to tell me that they lost a chick, unfortunately. She thinks being exposed to the cold, plus maybe he was a weak one, was too much for the little guy. She tried to save him, but it was too late. She has the other two and momma in a smaller coop set-up with a brooding lamp, so hopefully, they make it through all this cold.
