Are they able to get out of the shell being in an egg carton?

Yes, with no issues. Just make sure that the eggs are large end upright.

Try a rat trap with a piece of liver or other tasty treat as bait.

RBahmer - I have only done it with them on their sides. You do have to keep an eye on them after you have a chick wandering around. We had a couple knocked around and the pip ended up down, they were fine when we turned them back over.

The chickens are everywhere today, in the front yard, back yard and woods, just no one in the coop! I'm guessing they are going farther because there is less to find. My dumb little Polish was wandering again. I found her back beyond the woods, over the hill and on her way to the swamp. The only good thing is that it is easy to see her white head bobbing in the leaves this time of year.

Christmas it is.......born & raised Catholic, was a heathen in my teens & early 20's and then back to being a faithful Catholic after marriage. Figured I torture my kids the way my parents tortured my siblings & I. lol jk.

My dad always said that if you want to keep good friends and piece among everyone....Never talk sex, religion or politics!!

AMEN...Merry Christmas

As soon as Keyt receives the shipment of eggs I sent her, we'll be incubating a batch together

A big ol Michigan thread welcome going out to LEEHAHA and eggluvr! This is not your average one or two posts a day thread, but rather five to six pages a day. Wise to check in daily or multiple times a day. That being said you will not find a nicer group of people that are always willing to help out with chicken stuff or life in general.

Olive, I love the dancing pig

rbahmer, I have hatched chicks out both ways and don't think it makes much difference either way. Your humidity should be higher for the last 3 days, up around 65 to 80% depending on who you talk to. Try not to open your incubator at all until the eggs have hatched. Chicks do not need any food or water for several days, and opening the bator can lead to temp and humidity issues.

Thank you 1 muttsfan. I removed the turner and put them in egg cartons and have no plans on opening it again until they hatch. I am so excited. I have black copper marans and blue copper marans eggs in there. And some mutt chickens.

Made more cookies today. As much as my sore hips would allow. I have made a bunch so far. I have dough in the fridge that needs to be rolled and made into the cookie they are for. I have pre-cut sugar cookies I think I will make tomorrow. I was also wondering why egg production dipped, and we realized my timer wasn't coming on at the right time in the coup. So, I got that re-set. I think it got full of dust and then the time gets slowly changed.

My goofy chickens REFUSE to use thier nesting boxes! They do lay in the same spots, but will not use the box if I put it there. They have actually pushed the box of the way. I have tried different bedding, EVERYTHING. They make a little nest with the straw on the ground and lay in that. Then leave the egg for me. My brahma lays on the shelving system that the roost on! I give up for now.....lol

I have decided I AM getting the chicks next week, if she has enough. If not, she has a hatch on the 23rd too. The are Polish Frizzles. Then I will also get two EE's in the spring. I have a nice big tote and warmer all ready for them.

I have a dog house, that we are getting that we are going to convert into a small coup for them in the spring once the weather is warm enough for them to go out.

AngelaB- Please, Please, Please post pics of the Polish Frizzles, not only when you get them but as they grow too. Those just may end up being some funky chickens. Can't wait to see them!!
