Hope you post pics of your chicks!!
Grandma, I read awhile back that vinegar mixed in with bleach makes the bleach work better. I mix mine all the time now when I do disinfecting. Sorry about your loss. Can't imagine how hard that must have been.

I will post pics when I take them out of the incubator and put them in brooder. One has hatched. It is either a Black Copper Maran or a Blue Copper Maran. Can't tell yet as it is too wet yet but it looks like a blue copper to me.

My daughter, Kaylie, and I are also huge Dr. Who fans. A TARDIS cake, what a great idea! Kaylie's birthday is tomorrow and I was just going to buy a cake but now I'm thinking... Her brother got her a sonic screwdriver for Christmas and I got her DVDs of ALL the new Dr. Who seasons, since the reboot. I found a great deal on Ebay!

What a great mom for decorating that cake for her. It's even more special as an amateur because it is soooo much harder for those of us without all the skills. I hope your daughter has a great birthday!

Here's a picture of Kaylie. Her caption to this picture is, "I feel like I'm forgetting something."

I know all of you who are not Whovians will have no idea what all this means. Sorry, just skip on by this post.

bob here,
Thanks for the info on breaking broody hen. Don't think that will work for me. Hen house is only 8 ft. long x 4 wide. However the covered & plastic wrapped run is 30 x 6 x6 ft. Any opinions on how Buffy would do Alone, in a dog crate there, temperature wise? Maybe a sun lamp. 24/7 ?

Chick grandma, So sorry for your loss.

Sounds a little too exposed to me - I don't think I would confine a hen in the run in the wintertime even if wrapped. Placing her in an exposed place until she comes to her senses works best, I know some people suspend the hens in a cage also.

Bobbry-

I was thinking about your broody hen last night.
Could you put her in the garage with a bit larger area than a crate and a heatlamp for warmth?
I was thinking a bigger area so she could move away from the heat.
Being broody really runs them down and I have had trouble with hens health after a time of being broody. I do think you should take action on her behalf.

Thanks for the encouragement all. I had to go to Starbucks this a.m. and sit for a while instead of doing morning chores. I still can't get out to the coop - too sad; but want to take the dishes and things out of the coop before my kids come home today. Trying to put a few things away so we don't have too many reminders facing us. I had a photo of my little hen in my purse that I showed people. We are so blessed by our pets! They are a huge blessing!

I have a blue orp that is broody, also. Only laid for like 3 wks before she went broody. I'm home most of the time, so I go out and take her off the nest a few times a day and put her in the middle of the yard so she'll eat some grass and poop, at least. If mine are free ranging, I'll put her in front yard and she'll stay out for awhile. I've never been able to break a broody and so just gave up. Just make sure they eat and drink. Some times just moving a broody to a different place will break them... like I said, I don't have luck with that, but you can give it a try.
Dark and windy day, but warm. Guess the chckens don't like the wind cuz they are hanging out in the garage.
Have a good day, all.

I am going to take another look at Dr. Who because of you!

Does anyone near Grand Rapids need a heat lamp or 250 w red bulb?
