Bats will eat mosquitos but they prefer larger prey such as moths. Dragonflies eat more mosquitos than bats.
And there has never been a documented case of a bat getting caught in anyone's hair. It's an old wives' tale.

RaZ - I'm glad you mentioned that it's an old wives' tale about bats flying into hair. Doesn't happen. I have a very nice huge bat box that I need to get hung but have read online not to put them on trees because bats actually find the box visually and may not find or use it if it is hidden by branches. I have several nice tall trees with branches very high up, so I'm thinking of using one of them as the box would be far below the branches. Any idea how to keep hornets out of the bat box? My neighbor had a box up for several years and never got bats in it because hornets took it over.

RaZ - So sorry about your hen. I see them all the time, but so far have not had any encounters.

Mama is still on her eggs. I brought her out this morning to stretch her legs and she went around to the front with the flock and took a dirt bath. She was off the eggs for probably 30 to 45 minutes. I was going to get her and put her back but decided to let her be the judge of time and left her alone. I hope she wasn't off too long.

ChicwannaB - I'm so sorry about your bad luck with hatching, especially when you can see how close a few of them came to making it. That's my main reason for not even trying it. Knowing my luck it would turn out the same way. I'll let Mama do her thing, but don't think I'll try incubating myself.

I didn't nessisarily have a bat fly into my hair, but because of a bat I am vaccinated against rabies! Was pretty exciting in an OMG kind of way. A bat was in the house and flying around, so I went to open up windows for it to fly out. Little bugger must have gotten tired and confused so it landed... ON ME. My instinct was to brush it off (this decision happened in like, a nanosecond) and it latched onto my finger. They sure do have sharp little teeth! Then it took off and went out a window into the night

Regardless, I still love bats. At least now if a zombie pandemic cause by a mutated rabies virus breaks out, I may be immune! I had to get both the HRIG for immediate prevention and then a total of four vaccinations over the course of a month, whee!

One of the profs at school is considered to be the top bat expert in the country (he was part of the study that claimed bats eat 10,000 mosquitos a night, it was bogus lab test test BTW). Two of my classmates did their master dissertations on bats, their diets, behaviour, distribution and whatnot. I'll have to ask them if they know how to keep wasps away from the boxes. I have never had wasps with the boxes that I put up. Maybe I got lucky.

I'm sorry Raz....it sucks really. The only chicken I ever lost was a BLA and it was to a hawk right inside their pen. They must be "chicken caviar" to a hawk. They are my smallest breed of chickens so I think they are viewed as the easiest prey of the flock. Sorry.

That nanosecond instictive decision often causes us more pain. You learn quickly not to swat when working with bees.

I had to get a rabies preventative shot for "just in case" when we were cave diving down in Mexico. Some of the caves had tons of bats in them and we were so deep in the jungle. I wonder if I'm safe from the zombie pandemic.

Congratulations!!!! What a great way to start the new year. Chickens are so much fun, I'm sure you can keep your neighbors happy. Raz sorry for your loss, I have read an article that said not to worry about bees in the bat box if the bats want to move in they will take care of the bees,...We have had a bat box in the basement for years. can't figure out were to put it. DH wouldn't let me put it on the telephone pole in the middle of the drive. didn't know they had to drop before flying. good pic of the hawk by the way!

Well I got my coop cleaned....it felt so good to be outside most of the afternoon. I did see a Hawk while cleaning but he wasn't interested in me and he didn't see my chickens for they were all in my flowerbed looking for goodies and camouflaged by the shrubs.
A helicopter did fly over while they were out in the yard & they froze like it was giant raptor.

I'm looking forward to this event....meeting everyone and maybe, hopefully coming home with a new chick or two. My family enjoyed going to Fowl Fest and I've told them this will be lots more fun!!

Of course it will be better than Fowlfest. Birds that you can buy or trade for, lots of good food, plus the oportunity to meet the kind, generous, beautiful, and funny Chickflick. Wait, she already has the site arranged so I don't need to suck up anymore.

However, she is someone everyone should meet and she is a dear friend.
