Hello. I have been on BYC for about a year now and just found out that this thread existed.

I am from South West Michigan near Kalamazoo. I just wanted to say hi and get to know some fellow Michigan people on this site.

I also heard something about a Chickenstock. What is it? And Where? I am kinda interested...

Thanks
Shaun
Welcome to this very chatty thread. :frow :D Beware of falling behind. If you do, it will take you forever to catch up! Chickenstock is fun place to go to. :)

Great Chicken, glad you found us. Nice bunch of folks who will make you feel quite welcome. Check my signature line for information about Chickenstock. A great time where you can put a face to the names.

We only got a little snow, less than an inch, so whatever got her must have done it before the white stuff fell because there are no tracks what so ever in the yard. It is worrisome to not know what got her, so I'm going to close up the run for a few days and maybe set a live trap to see what critter I catch. Whatever got an easy meal will probably come back for another.
A friend told me he had a fox take a chicken off without leaving much behind, so if something did take off with her and leave only a few feathers I won't find them until after the snow melts.

Ferret - I'm wondering if because she was sick she hid herself under or behind something and died? Possible?

Hey thanks for all the replies BTW. I'm going to give Dr. Fulton a call - Thanks Linda! I'm one of those that try and keep everything so-so, and clean my chcikens and rabbits weekly no matter what. I've done some reading on Mareks and have decided chicks that are vaccinated probably have a better chance down the road. My other birds are robust and looking good so I feel pretty good about them. Again, thank you for all the replies. Peace, John

John - I'm so sorry about your hen. Disease and injury are my greatest fears in raising chickens. I'm a real softie even though the chickens are not my pets and I do not cuddle and hold them, I hate for any of my animals to get sick or suffer. I hope you determine whether it is Marek's or not and do what you need to do for her. Good luck.

Winter is back for a few days and looks like it will be back up to 38 and 40 next week. Of course, this IS Michigan and we all know how weather predictions go. I just really love when the chooks can get out and peck around because it helps stretch the chicken feed a bit.

Later.

In the mail today, I received the TSC "Dollar Days" flyer. They have pine shavings priced 2 for $9 and Dumor Layer 16% at $14 for a 50 pound bag.

Your welcome John. He won't be able to tell you for sure without tests but he can give you his opinion and what to do about it. If it is Mareks you will have to have vacinnated chicks as you said.. and even then they can get it...just not have the symptoms that are so horrible to watch. I read all about it last year when I was looking up info on scaley leg mites and other problems that flocks can get. There are also so many sad tales on BYC from people who have had Marek's in the flock. Very sad. Best of Luck.
