WARNING: LONG NERD ARTICLE
About a week ago while trying to help someone on a different thread with a malnurished bird, i learned that feeding a bird too much protein can give them gout. (But they need more during times of stress and while they are moulting) Which gave me the question "how much is too much?" so i had to research it all, of course. (An egg, by the way is 6 grams of protein, and they can have beween 15-30 grams) That led to me reading an interesting article the other day on parrot nutrition, and the gist of it was that if you feed something like say, corn, which has a lot of nutrient "x" in it, it takes a lot of nutrient "y" to break it down and therefore you have to feed 2x as much nutrient "y" to make up for it. So basically me feeding my birds corn based scratch then giving them their daily ration of vitamins/minerals/proteins is getting me no where. But i do not like purina at all, or dumor which is made by purina. I can not use a feed which has extra calcium in it either because of my roosters, (also causes gout) and no one will eat powdered or crumbled ANYTHING even if it is the only food available for months because i already bought it and look it is GOOD for you! Sigh. Spoiled kids. For anyone who likes to read about stuff, here is the article that sparked my interest :
LET'S TALK ABOUT NUTRITION AGAIN
