Returned to college for my masters degree today after MANY years - 28 to be exact.

Half way through the first class...... my big fear comes true. The professor trashes a treatment that I know works. The class laughs with him - young folks, no hands on experience at all.
I am steamed. I raise my hand and point out that in practical experience, this treatment often works for people. I know the research on it is inconclusive but it WORKS.

Not a good start. The professor is good at theories but maybe has been in the classroom too long. The students will follow him whereever he leads them.
And me - I have hands on experience and if it doesn't match the info in the class? I am going to trust my experience.

This is going to test my patience.........

Sounds to me like a prime case of strictly teaching from the book with no hands on to back it up. I would attempt to share your hands on, but keep in mind the most important part is answer to the book so as to pass and get yer degree.

I can certainly relate to what you are going through. I'm older than most of my professors and my real world experence (job) was from a different field, but my "biology experience" is based on 40 + years of hands-on, in the field experience that I obtained whilst also doing my "real job".

I have to laugh about the youngsters and their lack of experience. Over the summer, I had a plant class and our class had to be in the swamps everyday for 3 weeks. Not one of those kids could keep up with me and were amazed that I could find the things that I found. They never even saw the things that they were walking on.

On the other hand, those kids taught me that there are new ways to look at things that I thought I already thought I knew I had the answers to. I guess it is because they have new questions.

I hope you get a good grade on your patience test.

Sorry Raz, Yorkchick just landed another one on your target. Too Funny!!

While I was making a thoughtful reply to Chicken Grandma, Yorkchick and you take a pot shot. I see that I am going to have to watch my back more closely.

Your post popped while I was responding and I tend to agree with you. But like I said in my reply, there is still a lot that we half-century geezers can learn. I find it refreshing to be in class with these green kids and see the world through a fresh set of eyes.

Yes, sometimes they are dumb as stumps but by keeping my mind open I find that this old dog can still learn a few new tricks.

I too am one of them second halfers. I too believe that we can always learn more BUT new knowledge doesn't render useless what has been proven to work.

OK I will be going back where I came from. Good night all.

I definitely need coffee this morning to settle me down. I just invested several minutes into composing a well thought out reply to the previous posts only to have it sail off into cyber space just prior to hitting submit. I had found a spelling error that I wanted to correct when shazam its gone. Perhaps returning to bed would make more sense than trying to retrieve the thoughts I had worked so hard to compile.

He's Alive!!!

My poor roo Frenchie was just attacked! My kids came running to my room saying they were hearing a chicken screaming from where they were in the living room. I ran outside with a flashlight hoping they were only hearing the roos going off for whatever reason, but no. When I got to the bantams, I found 5 of them and 2 great big piles of feathers (no blood, just feather). I have to tell you my heart sank when I saw those feathers. I flashed back to when we lost Frenchie's sister, Muffin and wondered if a skunk found a way in again. I was able to track the feathers about halfway across the yard before losing them. So my youngest daughter and I started systematically going over all the yard even though it's dark and raining. I warned her if we found him he would most likely be dead. I was about to give up and was on the other side of the yard when we both heard some clucky noises. She ran over to our side deck and there he was! He was on the deck and so scared. I was able to get him and we brought him inside. I looked him over, but minus the feather loss he looks fine. We've got him in a dog carrier with a nice warm blanket and a cuddly toy to keep him company. I'm going to keep him inside tonight so he can calm down and get dry. I don't know what attacked him, but thank goodness whatever it was wasn't able to finish the deed.

So glad he is OK< sounds like he did a good job of protecting his girls. Lucky boy deserves a special treat

Farmerboy -- Sorry you're not working as much these days. At least it's while you're still at home so you don't have rent to worry about.

Teeville -- Glad your roo is okay. Had the first racoon we've seen in a few years come up on Wednesday night. It's been so long since there were varmint issues out here we didn't grab the gun so had to come back in for it and the big, fat you-fill-in-the-blank waddled away before we got back out there. Of course that's what the dumb chicken gets for not going in at night, too. She's fine, the coon was trying to drag her off so just a little shocked. DH carried her to the coop. Maybe she learned her lesson. Probably not.

Oddly enough, the busier I am, the more I am able to get done. With so much homework I have a lot of reading to do and can get bogged down mentally, the forum gives me a break by changing my thought process. Same holds true when I'm doing computer homework.

Then there are some times that I just read the posts and don't respond because I can't think of anything of value to add. Although I often have nothing of value to add but I post anyway.

Oh, I absolutely agree. But that only works to an extent and then there just ceases to be enough hours in the day.

I wish I could relate to your position, but I did things bass-ackwards and never did have the whole single, no-kids, no-work college experience. Instead I worked 55 hours outside the home, took 16-24 credits per semester, and had two kids and critters to take care of at home before I could dig into homework. Which usually happened on lunch breaks and after midnight only. When I say that only works to an extent and then you run out of hours in the day and/or the mental capacity to function I'm not just citing some fancy book-learnin', since we're talking life experience, I'm drawing directly from it. Hehe.

Things are considerably quieter these days -- especially this time of year. And I consider myself quite fortunate, but I still can't seem to keep up with anything more than a quick scan a couple times a day. Maybe that's all my brain wants for it's break time.
