I take groups of kids on tours of the grounds and teach them according to their grade level and what the teacher's curriculum is. Usually I do the outdoor trails but sometimes I do the conservatory as well.

I'm also on the burn crew, so I get to set fire to the prairies from time to time. Oddly enough, I don't do any gardening activities there.

My favorite plant to show children is skunk cabbage. I just love the look on thier face when they smell it.

Thought I'd better post if for now other reason than to have a starting point tomorrow.

With the way the day turned out I sure wish that I had gone fishing today.

I admire those of you who are going back to school to further your education and employment potential. If I were to go back and get a masters I doubt that I would improve my employment potential. Fire fighting is definitely a job for someone much younger than I. As for starting a new career I would have to figure out what I want to do once I grow up.

With regard to new knowledge versus experience, as you approach the 1/2 century mark you have amassed an incredible amount of life experience. When I was at that milestone I often found it extremely difficult to keep my mouth shut when I knew what an instructor was teaching wouldn't work in the field.

As I approach my 7th decade I find younger people calling upon me for my supposed wisdom. They mistake my quiet demeanor for a rapt interest in what they are saying. The reality is that I just trying to hear what they said.

That's one of my favourite things to do. I tear off a leaf and have them pass it around.

• Y'all sure are busy. I skimmed through many posts today. ';lkjhgd [ just ran a finger over some keys, ain't cussing] Buffy, our broody hen is still broody. Skinny and not looking well. Still here. I sure hope she is not in pain. How does one know. No signs. I'm going to try posting pictures of her and the other buff. Check out the combs. Yes i have paper patterns

I started out with different sizes, still have them. this is my "one size fits most" it fits my roo, my orp, my EE, and the new hampshire. Not so sure about the big favorolle roo. I have a tiny pattern for my mini cochin too! I was gonna sell saddles, but there is a lot of competition

and the people over here "don't put clothes on their chickens"

This hen is a hatchery EE, i think. She's the first one i "rescued" from the auction. She was so sick and covered with bugs. She also had CRD, which i didn't know at the time. So all mine have it now, but they don't show symptoms. She was pretty damaged when i got her, and the cold makes her breathe harder. She is healing, i think, but slowly. Some call her color gold duckwing, some lemon blue.The chart i had said lemon blue was made by crossing a brown red bird with a blue one. But on the EE thread they said no; i can't find where i found the chart (of course) but the pics i saw of that type of cross looked similar.

At any rate she's my lap princess (by demand) and she thinks the saddles are a "status symbol" and she is lording this one over all the others!

muttsfan & Chickmate - The rocks are cool but that pile is nothing, we have stones on top of rocks on top of boulders! Our property was a farmed field and rock piles everywhere. If we dig down more than two foot that's all that's down there. Absolutely no fun for digging but really cool to look at. When the snow is gone I'll show you our huge rock retaining walls for our walk out basement.

Long day here. School work with a very stubborn child this morning.

I went several rounds with the bank on the phone.

Then, I had to spend the afternoon clothes shopping with my niece. I hate clothes shopping.

My idea is a resale shop, not her's. Then a birthday party that took all evening so nothing was done at home today. Now because I'm stressed and been grinding my teeth my TMJ is making my jaw hurt. The end of my day.... curl up in the warm bed with my lap top and catch up on the daily dose of chicken drama. A nice ending to a long day.

Bobbry, what beautiful hens!
I share your concern about the broody. Can you bring her inside in a bird cage/dog crate for a short time to spoil her and help her snap out of it.

Thanks for all your encouragement everyone. I will keep you posted on my adjustment to college.

My experience is in the medical and mental health field. My focus now is on mental health. I have only worked out West - California and Hawaii so I don't limit my thinking to the stictly medical model. There are a lot of ways to help people feel better/heal. Vitamins for example. Good sleep. Exercise. Nutritional supplements. Church.
Siting around a campfire provides light therapy to the eyes and heals the brain from trauma. I do yoga and it slowed my heart rate down dramatically.
There are interesting things that can help people if you have an open mind. I am pretty sure you all will agree that sitting in the yard, watching a flock of chickens is one of the best therapies there is!

The creek in the woods at the bottom of the ravine. Its part of the calve's pasture, but they will not access it until spring.
