A while back I offended some of you by suggesting that the filing (or not) of a Schedule F may play a role in whether or not one is a "farmer" for the purposes of legal protection under farm protection legislation. I'd like to make up for the offense I may have caused so today, I'm working on our farm taxes and would like to invite anyone who is so inclined to come help.

Perfectly normal, perfectly healthy. Too late for this time but in the future, do not open the bator until all chicks have hatched. Think of it as a rule, not a suggestion. If it were a suggestion it would be called close-it-and-only-open-it-if-you-think-of-a-good-excuse rather than Lockdown. LOCK it down. Don't open it. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. No exceptions.

Glad it is a normal thing. The one little guy looks pretty sad still. Sorry if I wasn't clear - I waited until all the eggs had hatched. Usually I wait until everyone is mostly dry to move them to the brooder but a couple hours after the last guy was out of the egg they still didn't appear to be drying off. That's when I moved them and discovered they really were dry. This time was easy - didn't get impatient, because all 5 pip to out was less than 24 hours. I was worried I was going to have to open it to add water, but discovered with a straw, funnel, duct tape and the vent plug pulled I could add water without opening it up!

I just wanted to stop in and say hi to all my Michigan peeps. I think it has been over a year since my last visit. I am still alive and kicking. I still have all my birds.....and now we have added sheep to the farm. Hopefully some of the old timers are still here that know me. lol

Hello zephyrcreek! I met you last year when we met at a car pool area and I picked up some hens or chicks to transport to Chickenstock to give to someone who bought them from you. Don't remember who it was anymore. You looked at my French Black Copper Marans roosters that I was trying to sell/rehome. Glad to hear you are well.

Well we got each and everyone of the girls nails trimmed. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it'd be although it doesn't seem like we took that much off. We blunted & rounded them. Almost all for except a few of them bleed a teeny tiny bit even though we didn't seem to trim that much.We had a dish of septic powder for each one stand in for a minute or two before we released them. They still seemed long to me but my DH said that we couldn't go any farther because the vessels were right there.....possibly the longer the nail the farther out the blood vessel is? I told him next time I'd like to find someone experienced, get a 4H kid / instructor....someone who's done this before to actually demonstrate how far down to go.

Good job on the nail trimming M.sue! Wish I had someone to help hold them for me. I trim my macaw's nails and have a hard time by myself. Maybe I'll get my neighbor when it comes time to do it. Looks like the pants leg works great!

They weren't nearly as good as in previous years. I did love that Budweiser promoted rescue dogs though!!

Hillbilly and Farmboy, glad to see you are signing up for the Easter hatch too. Any idea what you will be setting? I have ordered Euskal Oiloa eggs, and Taprock has kindly offered some Am eggs (not sure what color). I may also be able to get some bantam cochin eggs, and hopefully some Norwegian Jaerhons. I will not tempt fate on how many will hatch, though.

Taprock I had a chick so gunked up last year that I had to give it a bath, one of the wings was glued to the body.

mutt, I am hoping that my German New Hampshires will be laying by then. I really want more of them. I also have the Barred Rocks, Black Austrolorps and Delawares. I may put in a few Delaweggers too.
I have been reading about the EO's and they are awesome! If only I had room for more breeds

hello everyone...chatterboxes...

Hope everyone had a good weekend. Randy, so sorry about extra-crispy.. any clue?

I am trying to rally my family to go out for chinese food tonight. I dont want to even start creating something to eat in the kitchen.
I cant even get the other humans here to sweep the floor today, much less clean the kitchen, and I am not going to do both.

I just discovered the babies have ventured out in to the actual backyard. I think that means they are growing up. I dont really recall how old they are- about nine weeks? Guessing.

My lone silkie egg is due to hatch on Sunday. That time seems to have gone by fast. Congrats to all with all the new babies.

The weather man is saying that winter arrives tomorrow. UM, I protest. Winter missed its chance. Now, if it gets here tomorrow, it wont leave until May...I just know it. My tree has buds on it. My crocus and daffodills are coming up. NO WINTER NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
