RaZ BTW keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer in your pocket when you go in the woods. The alcohol will help neutralize the ushinol oil.
Would the oils still build up in your system? I found gasoline to neutralize too, in a pinch. (All i had) Our local convenience station is selling a "poison ivy" neutralizer soap, i may get some for this year just in case.

I really want to let them run around in the yard for a few minutes, I think they would have fun but I worry that they would get cold too fast. This is my first bunch of babies & I dont want anything to happen to them!! I guess they will tell me if they get cold right? Should I feed them some chick grit before they go outside too? Or will just eating dirt be ok?

They will pick up small pieces of gravel, you don't really need to give them grit, I have never given my chicks any. That is as long as you let them free-range.

When I do a tour a MBG, I like to show the kids how big this vine can get. There is one on a sycamore that reaches the crown at about 60 - 70 feet up and the stem at ground level is as thick as my forearm.

I have poision ivy on my trees out front and one of the vines is 8 inches at the base. I tried to kill it with a hatchet a few years ago and couldn't cut through it. I was kidding my neighbor that I feed it Miracle Grow. The birds and squirrels do love those berries!

I was worried about Mama who continued to hide in the coop, but today I see her and all four babies out in the sunshine with the rest of the flock. My neighbor is going to watch the chickens for me and I told her to just let them out in the morning and do a head count and lock them up at night. I'm hoping there are no fox or hawk attacks while I'm gone because she wouldn't know what to do. I could just tell her to keep them locked in the run the whole time, but they get so antsy and I'm concerned that Joe might pick a fight with Worf if they are locked up for too long. She wouldn't know what to do about that either.

It's not really a "build up" of the oils in your system, most people become more sensitive to contact with the oil over time or contact bouts. Of course, your results may vary.
I'll use Technu if I know I'm going into an area with poison ivy, but I usually carry a sample size bottle of hand sanitizer in my pocket.

A general rule is don't touch it if you don't know what it is. Which I like to teach the kids on a trail walk. I pluck a leaf of skunk cabbage and pass it around for them to smell.

It is always good for a laugh!

Because it is the oil in contact with your skin that causes the reaction, any kind of soap and water will work best, the sooner the better after contact (as in run for the house)

The quicker you can rid you self of the oil containing ushinol the better you are going to be. I have found that any dish detergent containing a grease release agent like Dawn to be the most effective.

I often here people talking about poison ivy "spreading". The mistakenly belief that if the blisters break the fluid coming from them is the cause of the irritation. The reality is that it is deposited on your skin in varying concentrations. The areas with the heaviest exposure react first. Sometimes several days from the initial reaction; hence the belief that it has spread.

So I bought a bag of chick grit when I bought my chickens...should I just return it? I mean, it won't hurt to give it to them will it? I figured when they were about 2 wks I'd start giving them some. I've also read that if you're only feeding them chick starter they dont need grit, unless they are eating other stuff, which I plan to let them do when theyre outside obviously.

I also wondered...I know they like dust baths, but is that something that they do after they have feathers, or when they're still downy? And the area where my coop is going to be doesn't really have a "dusty" area...should I make, like, a box with dirt in it for them? Thanks in advance for any info from anybody, and nice to meet everyone btw.

OMG I hear you. I work until 5, I'd rather be at home getting my chicken coop area ready for the building this weekend! I wish I could take the rest of this beautiful week off and just keep busy in the yard. I'm having a hard time concentrating on work right now because I know it's nice out!!

The only reason that I am reading this is that I am eating lunch. While I will be going back outside in a few minutes, what is aggravating for me is that I was supposed to be fishing. I was going to go to Newago and fish the Muskegon River but a check of the weather report indicated extremely high water levels. So we opted to fish the Huron River instead. When we got there at daylight we discover that it too was much to high and fast to fish safely. So after a 140 road trip I am back home and working in the yard.
