Sure wish that I could have won last night's Mega Millions. I could certainly put the the money to good use. But maybe I'll win Friday substantially more money. I'd probably buy each of you a new chicken or two if I win.

I hope you win, if you do could I have a new coop to go with that chicken?

This is my first year with turkeys. I got these BR last summer. Right now I have 3 toms & 2 hens. ( I know, I need to cull at least one of the toms. Nobody fighting yet though) My hens started laying 3/14. They only laid everyother day for the first 4 days then kicked right in to an egg from each hen every day. Everyday I go out to write the date on the eggs, so I could remove the older ones the more they laid. I kept revolving around 12 eggs. I went out last night, but could not get into the nest. A hen is in there. I believe she is sitting on 14 eggs. That was yesterday evening around 6pm. She is still in there. I did see her out of the coop just before dark for about 30 sec's then she was back inside. Keeping my fingers crossed. They are all between 9-10 months old. The males have been strutting constantly since early january & my husband seen them a cpl times mid-late january breeding.

Congrats on the broody turkey.

Hi all!

I am going to raise chickens for meat for my first time this year, and I am looking for chicks in west Michigan. I am in the Cedar Springs/Sparta area, but would travel.

Does anybody know of a farm selling chicks?

Thanks

Family Farm and Home sells the cornish crosses. Unless you are looking for a dual purpose breed. See my siggy line for what I breed.

Olive,
Thanks, I had no idea. I've got a message to a lady up here.selling a breeding pair ,but haven't heard back from her yet. Found another lady who has hatching eggs in white cloud. I'm picking the eggs.up tomorrow. If the gal with the pair calls back I may have to cancel picking up the eggs....Nah! Who am I kidding. They're small and can't eat much right. Repeat after me..I do not another chicken......I do not need another chicken......Lol.
Oh, you will be near me. You should give me a call sometime and we could meet. They will be having the small animal swap meet starting in April at the Family Farm and Home soon. I believe it is the second Saturday of every month till October, 8 till noon. I will have to find my paper and check the dates and time to be sure.

Um, well, I'm better at painting than I am at photographing, but here goes . . .

This is a Cathedral in Britain (Salisbury), where I used to go to school - I can't get the flash to work properly, the colors aren't right. But I'm very happy with the composition, even though Himself says I paint dark and dismal paintings (well, it's twilight!)

Beautiful art work TC

Sorry if I forgot any new members.

Sorry to for the loss of the Isa brown.

It has been a long day trying to keep up with an 8 year old. It's been a long time since I have had to keep up with a little one.

Need to ask about one of my buff orps. The other day as I was watching the chickens I noticed her running across the yard with kind of a hobble. I mentioned it to DH and he noticed it, too. I thought it looked like she had injured her leg at some point and that it healed wrong and he thought she might have something stuck in her foot. I checked her over and she seems fine. Nothing in her foot and leg looks right. Now mind you she is the heaviest girl out there. Obviously an eater. She a good deal bigger than her sister. So I'm wondering is her size the problem? Too much weight to run with? Can anyone can come up with anything different for me to check out? She appears healthy in all aspects except for the hobbled looking run.

If she's not acting off I wouldn't worry too much. Could be weight, could be an old injury, could just be a hitch in her giddy up. You should see how the CX hens run, it's like a herd of elephants. LOL!

HH,
I don't know why, but I never thought a small animal swap would have chickens. I guess I just thought it was for guinea pigs and rats. Definitely let me know when they are, I'd like to check it out. My daughter would love to see all the different critters. The Apple doesn't fall far from the tree.:)

Welcome to all the newbies! You'll like it here. Everyone is very kind and not afraid to share their knowledge, humor and encouragement.

Teeville,
Where are you at? RIRjen has chicks. I found a dozen hatching eggs that I will pick up tomorrow to put in the incubator on Wednesday. I only want to keep one...I'd be happy to share with you. Or if you want to "cook" your own I can get you the gals name that has the eggs. She has another dozen sitting there.

Tomorrow is hatch day. WooHoo! K, I followed the advice of a post that said not to lay shipped eggs on their sides for lockdown , but to put them in cut down egg cartons instead. So, how long do I leave them there, till they pop then take them out?

Elliemae - The chicks will hatch fine in the carton. Leave them alone until all chicks have hatched. It's called lockdown for a reason you want to keep your bator LOCKED DOWN to maintain the appropriate humidity for the hatching process. Your chicks can easily survive 3 days without food or water after hatching so there's no need to open it to retrieve the earliest hatchers until after the later hatchers have made their way out.

Olive,
Oh no! My secret is out .......Patience is not one of my virtues.....No, seriously though, I really appreciate your help. And I'll do my best to keep that lid closed. They designed it kinda stupid though, the vents don't line up with the water tray, so I have been adding water to the sponges with a turkey baster. Just checked, and 1 pip.

Beautiful paintings!

I homebrew but haven't made wine yet. I should try some, that way maybe I can keep the sulfides out of it.

My dad does..I usually have lots of bottles of homemade wine sitting around- not now, but every year he gives us a ton. I will share when I get some.

And this is Bewdley, also in England, and the colours are way too saturated. Better get hubby to take some better pics.

Absolutely beautiful paintings! I cant tell from the photo, oils, acrylics, watercolor? You should definitely show your paintings!
I used to paint and draw....long time ago.

Thank you Nova. It's encouraging when people say that because I have Macular degeneration, and I'm never sure that what I see and paint is what is really there. (My perceptions are WAAAAY off!)

Kids happened to me too, so I encourage everyone/anyone to "TRY" and fit these things into their lives while they can. I wish I'd kept doing it while raising kids. I think of all the time I didn't paint and how much better I would be now if I'd kept at it.

Absolutely correct! I cant hardly draw now because of arthritis in my hands, its definitely a talent that if you dont use, you lose! Even if you do use, you eventually can lose...

You have to sit on your hands. Seriously- its the hardest part of hatching. Find something to do, and walk away from the incubator...just dont open it!

WHOEVER asked me what size the panels are- I dont remember, but I will go measure them today.
ETA: http://www.homedepot.com/Lumber-Com...splay?catalogId=10053&langId=-1&storeId=10051

that is the link to the actual panel on Home Depot.
