As long as you are feeding just chick starter you don't need grit. However, once you give them anything else you will need to provide them with grit. You can buy chick sized grit at TSC or most farm stores. Calcium isn't necessary until just prior to laying.

Grandma, when I have to write anything I still get out pen and paper and do an old fashioned outline. Intro, paragraph titles, the whole 9 yards. I still do my writing on the computer, I just find it so much easier to have a outline to follow.

I was so happy fall 2010 to find a magnolia at Home Depot that was rated for zone 3. It was late in the fall, and the poor stick- like tree was on the sale table. Just like charlie brown I took the scruffy little thing home. After digging a huge hole and planting it with great hopes, and back filling with soil and mulch, I fully expected the tree to die over the winter. Instead it has flourished, bloomed for a long time last year, and survived two winters.

I am going to be a Uncle in October!!!! My oldest brother and his wife gave my dad a letter during lunch, and my dad read it out loud to us, and they have also finally found a foreclose house, and may move into their new home in a few weeks! :celebrate :woot :ya :yesss:

Chicken Grandma- Glad that you have found a home for your birds.

I sold more of my flock as meat birds today- 8 Cockerels, 2 guineas, and I sold 5 peafowl as meat birds also last week. I am culling down to the best breeders, but if the chicks do not hatch out clean of MG, then I will sell all that I have as meat birds on the same day I set the results. The chicks are not due to hatch until Easter. So hoping!!!! Please God!

I should be trying to get something done but............Today is Sunday. It's supposed to be a day of rest so I refuse to feel guilty about not doing anything. Come to think of it if I don't do anything tomorrow I won't feel guilty about that either.

Based on the picture above with the hen and the puppy I thought I'd post a couple more of those "ah gee" pictures.

I hope I didn't jump the gun too soon. I put the new chicks out in the garage. They needed more space and the little roo was getting awful bossy.

My first new chicks in a couple years are coming this week. Anything I need to remember that I may have forgotten? Got the brooder set up with a light bulb and the heat source works, got the chick starter yesterday, got vitamins for the water. That seems to easy, I must be forgetting something! They don't need grit or calcium yet do they?

Oh and my guineas have started laying eggs! I'm going to collect some once they really get going and see if I can hatch a few. Haven't incubated eggs in a few years either!
Congrats on the new chicks. I sure wish I could have some guineas but DH says "no, they are way too noisy".

Congrats Daron, that is wondeful news. I will pray that things work out with you flock too.

Opa, I haven't gotten much done today either. I had a good friend come by with her DH for a visit and while she helped me with a quilt delimia her DH helped mine with changing motorcycle tires.

chicken grandma, good luck with your paper.

Today would have my Mama's 69th birthday.

It absolutely does. I painted for three hours today and it was like no time had passed at all. I was tense when I started, and feel so relaxed now. I really should paint more often, I used to be not too bad....
I have a little book i take with me everywhere, just so I can sketch things. Sometimes I don't use it, but if himself is driving, I can often grab a sketch or three! And the more you draw, the better the paintings will be.

Quote: The nice thing about acrylics, is that they dry fast. I never was any good with them though - which is why I work on several paintings at once, so when one isn't dry enough to work on, there is another standing by. And I never could use watercolors.

Hillbilly - So glad your hen was able to escape! Fox hunting during the day, I wonder if this means the kits are arriving now. I'll have to start being very watchful, I'm sure several fox are still living in my area.

That was how we lost our first gosling and goose. Late afternoon, we went inside to get the stuff for the barbie, and a couple of beers, and by the time we got back out side, Lizzy(gosling) and Ty (goose) were gone. We had left left sitting by the steps to the deck. Not even a feather to be seen. Some days later we saw the fox strolling down the side of the road in broad daylight!

Yup it's that time of year . . .

Mom2EmAll

As promised, 3 weeks old. Now I have to leave for Boston to finish a house. When I get back I'll shoot some 5 week pics. Oh, and a warm Palm Sunday to all the peeps out there no matter where you are!

awwwwwwwww see my bunny? Its that fat girl right there
love.gif

I have told my husband and my girls that I am getting a bunny. My fourteen year old says, "Arent you too old to get a bunny for a pet?"

Mom 2em All and six little silver and white banties that I would have gotten if my husband wasnt with me- only because someone on this thread had asked about those, had one and it passed away...just cant remember who.
That would be me, i had a little porcelain de'uncle that i fell in love with. So cuddly, rubbed his little head all over my hand when we were snuggling.

Juise, i have been wanting to ask you about the cold pressed coffee thing..... could i put coffee in a mason jar, fill it with water, then strain it with a cloth??? I have never had that kind of coffee, and i am intrigued.....also, being able to just heat up premade coffee in the morning would be priceless.

Well all, Raz don't have to roll in the poison ivy, looks like i did it for him

I think our goat escapee got into the poison sumac while i was going to get DH the other day, so now he has it all over his face probably, and i didn't figure it out quick enough, so...... and that bit about not spreading is hooey, cause i fell asleep with my hand tucked under my face, and yup, there too, in exactly the same spot as that part of my hand was touching! Sigh.

Going to go get some rubbing alchohol to keep out by the animals, soap and witch hazel isn't working good enough.

Sooooooo itchy..........

I would have picked them up for you. I would have but I married an Ogre. And he has no problem saying NO. Which is why my kids and my grandson always come to me when they want something. And my grandson will melt me by saying, "Pweeeze Drammmmaahhh"..

Instant puddle. Okay, you can have it.

Also- I am severely allergic to poison oak, poison ivy, etc. I once had the worse case of poison oak- and did the same thing, fell asleep on my arm, woke up with it on my face, one eye swollen shut...my arms were so swollen that when I would fully straighten them, the skin would split at the elbow..I SHOULD have been hospitalized, but my redneck- deep southern father just brought home buttermilk and told me to use that. (doesnt work).

OK...what is AFD?? I have no idea and if you go get that Rooster Sculpture I will be soooooooo jealous!! Might just prompt me to go get mine...coupon or not!
I echo that! I want a rooster statue too..well, no. I want THAT one. 36 inches high. Perfect.

I hope I didn't jump the gun too soon. I put the new chicks out in the garage. They needed more space and the little roo was getting awful bossy.

How old are they? My chicks from Theron are how old? Two weeks? They really have learned how to make messes- the ones in the house. They are the four bumble bees (d'uccles) and three Easter Egger mixes. The rest are out with Mama Hen.

Thank you all for the ant advice- I will come up with a mixture of your concoctions- how about nutrasweet mixed with Borax? Stupid ants.
And thank you for the compassion about having a meeting today. It all boils down to dont wish for something unless you are willing to stand up for it. I am trying to "overthrow the government" at work, and to do so I had to report some things to the BIG BIG BIG out of state bosses. Well, when that occurs, you gotta be willing to come meet when they say so. Today was the day- and they wanted to meet with the rest of the staff...and surprise! They all echoed what I have told the bosses. Of course, at first they werent talking and I, being their supervisor, had to say, "Why are you just sitting there? Tell them what you all come to me and say." and once they started talking, there was no stopping them.
I may have hell to pay come tomorrow for "kicking the hornets' nest", but someone has to stand up for the overworked, underpaid, and unappreciated. Thats my job- so thats what I did.
