Laura, I had a great time with the kids and grand kids. Had lunch with the grown kids and visited the grand kids on way home. Make a stop at each kids house. Makes for a long day, but want to keep in touch with them all. Loved your chick pics. How adorable that the bigger chick is protecting the lil chick.
Have a good night, all.
Sounds wonderful, I can't wait for grands, but the kids are in no hurry.

Anyway, the bunnies are too cute! They are all out and about now running and jumping, eating alfalfa and pellets, drinking Mom's water, and imprinting on us humans. I'll shoot some pics in the AM and get them uploaded for you! If you really want one we'll have to figure out how that can happen. I have one set aside for HH also, lol! Anyone else? BTW, I have a black NZ that is about a week along....

I am bringing my bantam modern games, gray runner ducks, standard dominiques and one self blue d'uccle there so ill check it out! thanks. These are my runners being curious ;)
I love it! It looks like the ducks are planning a sneak attack on the kitty.

Ok...so my Georgia silkie eggs are in the hatching bator now on lockdown and we're still waiting for signs of piping from the 1st batch. lots of shaking...no pipping yet. Almost all of my silkies are going broody on me...which sucks cause it's cutting back on my eggs and I want to show them at the end of the month and can't do that if they've lost condition from wanting to sit. Any tips on getting a broody to knock it off?

Put the broody you want to break in a cage and don not give her any nesting materials. It took about a week for mine to break. Good luck. I am actually hoping for a couple of broodies right now.

Happy Friday the 13th!!

Hey people, I'm sorry for the recent errors. I think t he sensitivity of my touch pad and the placement of an "ALT" key next to the space bar is part of the problem (are parts of the problems) I'm having. I did type a response to Chicken Grandma. Her ''" Why I Loved Hawaii " post prompted some memories here too.

I was an 18 year old high school drop out, in a USN Air Sea Plane patrol squadron, bound for the Philippine Islands to chart traffic in/on the South China Sea. It was Submarine traffic. I was ignorant to the nth. We Had about a 2 week layover with little to do but wait to move on to the P.I. Imagine mmmmmmmmmmmm y dismay at fresh ripe pineapple (I had never eaten that& I'm not sure I even knew it existed) always,so it seems, available in the mess hall, a swimming pool right outside the barracks, Liberty on Waikiki beach, BLACK sand beaches, 75 cents for a fifth of whatever. I Loved It there. Ahhhh PERSPECTIVES.

i OFTEN read about breaking broodies. Probably cause I myself have asked how to do that. Now, I have the opposite question. Is there or are there ways to stimulate broodiness or is it broodiism in
chickens? I want to have one of our ladies hatch and raise a few chicks. I'll have to arrange to buy some fertile eggs. BUT do i need the broody hen FIRST ..... THIS IS NOT a restatement of the age old question ? I really want to know. Thanks, bob

All I have to do is skip a day of gathering eggs and one of my silkies will claim them as theirs and never leave the nest again, lol...until a week before hatching time, and then it is to freak me out.

I just went and stole TWO eggs out from under my new Mama Hen with the three babies. One was the dud, the other was an egg someone laid next to her. She pulled it under her. I think her brain is broken. She isnt ready to get up off the nest and be a mama..she wants to keep sitting. So, I stole them from her. HELLO Mama...babies...duh...

I just gave my broody Java 12 fertile Faverolle eggs from SillyChicken - She was so sweet to bring them to work with her so I could pick them up right by my house - how awesome is that? :) Mama chicken was very pleased with the eggs I brought her and is sitting on them already. It's going to be a long 3 weeks for me, I'm so excited!

When I decided to quit giving away my excess eggs and start selling them I gave a lot of thought about pricing. I finally decided that I would trust people's innate goodness. I placed a sign asking for help with my feed bills so we can all enjoy eggs much fresher than anything available in the store. Please leave what every you feel is fair. So far this year everyone has been leaving $4 or $5.

Opa, that's a really neato idea, and I think it is wonderful that the same amount that would make people cringe and walk away if you asked for it is what they are willing to give when it is up to their own hearts.

It sounds mean but I put icepacks in each nesting box. I had two hens who were always broody from a breed that isn't known for going broody.

Yup, that would probably stop broodiness on my part!

I have a cousin who has been stationed in Hawaii for a couple years now, and thus far he and his wife are still way in love with the place. Of course, they moved there from Conneaut, Ohio, so I'd be surprised if they didn't fall in love with practically anywhere else. My parents did go for a vacation a couple years ago, and my Dad said he liked visiting but would never in his life like to live there.
