Thanks Nova!

Juise & B737... I am interested in home schooling my son in the future... Where do I start? I found this site a few weeks ago... Maybe you already use it!

Speaking of teaching children...

So Cheerios has books in the box right now and my son got one called "THE NEW GIRL AND ME" by Jacqui Robbins. I am very disappointed they they would put this book in there, or maybe I should have read it alone before reading it aloud to my son... Allow me to quote...
"...and one boy named D.J. who calls Shakeeta Mosquita until she says, 'I'll punch you in the head!'"...
"I want to know about Shakeet...a and her iguana. But I do not want to get punched in the head."...
"Maybe now Shakeeta would like for me to show her around. Maybe she will punch me in the head."...
"I can't help it. I laugh at Shakeeta's iguana's silly name. Now she will punch me in the head."...

After the first round of "punch in the head" my son was like "why?...why?...why?"
DANG YOU CHEERIOS!!! DID I REALLY NEED TO EXPLAIN TO MY SON WHY IT IS NOT OKAY TO PUNCH PEOPLE IN THE HEAD BECAUSE SHAKEETA WAS GOING TO???? HAVE YOU EVER TRIED TO EXPLAIN AN EMPTY THREAT TO A 3YEAR OLD?

What the...

I wouldn't bother explaining empty threats, I'd just tell him saying such a thing is inappropriate because we don't even TALK about hurting people and leave it at that. There's so much that's inappropriate in this world, it seems it's just one more thing to add to the list.

teeville - those cat pics are awesome! My indoor cat thinks he's a tough guy with the chicks. I was worried until this morning when he laid down by the brooder and they pecked at his head and he jumped back all confused an annoyed. I may have a white feral around here though that is significantly more dangerous. Not sure yet but if I live trap him anyone want a mangy white hunter? I've caught him at least 3 times in the last 6 months with some rodent in his mouth. I just don't know that I want him around the birds.

Oh, yeah, yuck it up woman. Time will tell whether I thank you or curse you. Actually what's the barter market with fowl for pork these days?

Fuzzy - I've heard that the best way to contain goats is to actually fence in an area where you don't want them and they'll stay in there all the time.

I still have Tamworth, Gloucestershire Old Spot and a Large Black Boar for TamxLB and GOSxLB... but no more AGH.

Wowzers! Did he just light up knowing that! He wasn't aware anyone in MI had those.
He really likes the heritage breeds and wants to go that direction in the future. He would like them to have a strong foraging ability so that a good portion of their food comes from the foraging.

Welcome Ladyrsanti!

I am in Grand Rapids and there are quite a few of us from West Michigan.
I hope you can sort through our silliness on here and get all the info you need.

Please ask any questions you would like - no question is too dumb. Chickens are a mysterious and curious bird!
We have had quite a bit of illness in W. Michigan lately so I you might want to read up on biosecurity for your flock.
Seems like W. Michigan has been the area where respiratory disease has come up most often.

This is a great site for learning about any aspect of raising chickens that is confusing! Enjoy!

Yay! I am also from the Grand Rapids area, SE. Thanks for the heads-up on the illness. I'll definitely keep tabs on that.

OH! I remember now what I ws going to comment on... Campbells! I have runner/campbell crosses. I really do like them. They are annoyingly adorable! They love mud pits, fresh water, escaping, tomatoes and peas are their crack... And since they started laying, they have out layed my 4 laying chickens... Well, thats cuz 2 of those chickens laying are banties... LOL

Oh, trust me, he knows there is no tolerance in this house for hurting anyone for any reason! But it was the explaining that didn't really need to be explained that got me upset. Well, I guess we can chalk it up to him getting another "we don't hit- EVER" speech...

Hey! Does anyone use calcisand for there chicks and or chickens? Do they just need the calcium while they are laying?

I have both the fowl and the pork, what are YOU bartering with?

They most definitely have that. We raise them on pasture during the growing season and in dirt pens spring/winter to keep them from ruining the wet ground. We picked up the GOS from Southern Illinois last year. That was a fun drive. LOL!

Olive, he wants to know if you have a website for your hogs. He would love to see some photos of them.
