Kinda sad today, i noticed last night that one of my mille chicks is developing crossed beak.
It's not the food, no one else has it and i'm using the manna pro gamebird showbird starter, which has a good nutritional makeup. I trimmed his/her beak to where the top beak point is even with the bottom beak point, and trimmed the corners off so hopefully it won't catch on them and be worse. Her beak is not crossed yet, at this point, it's just gapped a little on the one side.

I read that even if the food has proper vitamin D, they still need unfiltered sunlight to get the D, so i'm going to start putting them outside for a little bit at a time with me. Her momma probably didn't get the proper vitamins, she was a hatchery bird.

I am going to keep trying to trim and hopefully it will grow normal, if it crosses i will have to put her down. :( Oddly enough it's not runt, it's one of the bigger ones...

should i feed her yolk or anything, or am i doing all i can?

To top it off it looks like my youngest is officially sick, he is downstairs in the lazyboy with a fever of 103.

Hope your little one is feeling better soon.

I spent yesterday morning testing out spinning wheels. Gosh they are expensive

I agree, you need a spinning wheel for those dogs.

Adorable bunny pic. What does "plucking" mean on a rabbit? Can you just pull off wads of fur when they are molting?
Terry Pratchett summed this up beautifully

I was totally going to go look that up to post, then I scrolled down and it was already there. It is true, though, sometimes knowing better isn't enough. You have to buy the $10 boots because you just can't afford the $50 boots. It doesn't matter that you will spend more in the long run because what you have is $10, not $50.

Oh, so... before I completely forget it. You guys give me nightmares.

The other night, after all that pig talk, I had a terrifying dream that I went outside to do something with the chickens, probably bring them treats, I shouldn't be surprised if I even spoil them in my sleep, and, lo! I see a huge freagin rhino stomp through the trees! It appears for a second, and is gone behind the trees again.

I'm a bit shocked to see a rhino rampaging through my yard, as I think most residents of Michigan would be, and it looked angry, and I am confused, so I walk, not run, back into the house hoping it doesn't notice me. But all my chickens and cats are out there, and I need to save them from the rabid angry rhino, so I go back outside. No sooner do I get back out than I see a cat go tearing past, and the rhino is in close pursuit. I feel sick and terrified, but what the hell am I supposed to do? It's a rhino!

All of a sudden, it becomes clear to me, it is not a rhino, it is a giant, escaped, invasive, mean, hungry, angry, ravaging boar.

The chickens seem to be in hiding, but the big pig is chasing all the cats every which way, and it keeps knocking them out of the trees, and it was horrible because all I could do was watch.

So... yes, I blame you all.

I also had a dream a couple nights later that had something to do with an animal which had the head of a pug, the body of a spider monkey, and the nails of a sloth, and in my dream I looked at in in horror and I knew it was all you guys' fault, but I am no longer clear on exactly why that is.

SC, how do you intend to heat that brooder box? Or is it actually a grow out pen?

I'd like to use it as both. I use a red 250 w bulb I could either fasten it inside or out, and put sides on it temporarily to help hold heat.

Do you have any other suggestions?

Friday DH and I drove to Lansing and got our ears pierced (well, re- pierced) I know some people don't like it, but I've wanted plugs for a long time. Just small ones, nothing too crazy, so we both have bigger holes in our heads now.

You may already know this, but take it slow with ear stretching. I've seen a lot of people (mostly young teens) size up week after week (or within hours) and it ruins their ears, sometimes even splits them in half.

There's a tumblr blog called Awful Modifications that has a whole list of guides and care procedures if you need them. Their main page usually has some pretty gross pictures of body modifications gone wrong, so be warned. They run the site as an attempt to educate people as to why it's important to go to a license professional rather than a friend of a friend in the mall bathroom. Another warning, the main blog can get a repetitive, and a bit preachy, so I would just bookmark the guides for future reference.

Best of luck with your ears, I hope they stay healthy and nice looking!

There is an material called "Thermo-ply" that is using in HVAC for panning cold air returns. It is a durable non corrugated cardboard that comes in a 4x8 sheet. It is inexpensive, light weight, and durable and you could attach it to the sides when needed and remove it when they no longer need heat.

When it comes to a home repair, Murphy's law is a given.

A simple clogged drain is going to result in a complete kitchen remodel.

It's always nice to meet a BYC'er. Especially when you have the opportunity to stuff their vehicle full of fowl and send them on their way.

Seriously though, I am now, officially, fowl free. Eeyore just left here with the last of our geese, ducks and turkeys and it was great having the opportunity to meet her. We literally stuffed her truck full of them and she's on her way home. It'll be weird stepping outside to an empty yard for the next few days, but it's nice to have another thing off the to-do list.

So cute, makes me want a rabbit.

AAAGGHHHH! I HATE THIS LG BATOR! Yet another temp spike, even when I've been babysitting the stupid thing. I had 14 eggs with good growth and movement, now I'm down to 6. Only a few days to go....hope they make it. After this hatch, I'm taking this wretched thing back to the store and get my money back.
Does anybody out there have a Hovabator1588? Do you like it? I would love to spring for.a.brinsea, but $300 is quite a chunk of change for something that I'll only use on occasion once I get a few bbs orps, ameraucanas and Silkies.
Yes. Set your eggs. Walk away. Set it and forget it. Don't mess with them. I'm pretty well convinced that many -- most, maybe -- hatching issues we see on BYC could be avoided if people would just LEAVE THE EGGS ALONE. Get yourself a turner, set the eggs and WALK AWAY. Do not candle seventeen times throughout the hatch, don't open it every other day to check on them, just walk away. I set my eggs, I walk away. I write the lockdown date on my calendar, I go back on that date and lock them down. That's it.

I have a 1588 and love it. I also tried my own first and it was a pain. Our joke with it is that saying - Set it and forget it. The only thing I had a problem is with the egg turner in seeing the water level, but I added food coloring so I can see the water in the bottom.

yes, i've yet to get that image out of my head....... Sunday best, all cuteness and innocent, holding a BIG DEAD coyote! And then the casual "oh, i just used a little peroxide to get the blood off".....!

My Pastor was actually teasing me about it this morning, I blame my husband, he's the one who wanted the picture. And actually she was a little coyote so there was no bragging. Last year I got a big one and had it tanned to make something out of. I haven't decided yet, maybe chicken aprons....

It looks beautiful out today but the wind is COLD! After a two week break I am finally working on my little coop/tractor again. The little guys are smelly in the basement and I want them out as soon as possible. There is a brush pile calling my name now so I guess my break is over.
