Why do ducks always look like they are smiling about something secret???

Thank you all for the warm condolences. It's so odd to think she's gone. My DH and I live right next door to them and I can't wrap my mind around walking up the hill and not seeing her outside mowing or puttering around. My dad is doing decently but he's sleep deprived and I don't think the full weight of it all has hit him yet. He was her main caregiver for nearly 5 months. I have a feeling he's going to find it deafeningly quite in the next few days.

I'm just so glad I live next to him so I can be there any time he needs company.

DH comes home from work and says "Joe needs 2 dozen eggs or Paul needs a dozen"

I think I like this method.

Er... this is streamlined?? I do once a week - well once a week for bathroom, floors, etc (I may spot vac mid week but not much). Dusting takes place when I get around to it or when my eyes start to get itchy. Listening to you guys I fear that I'm some horrible slob. Not that I'm going to change anything, mind, but still.

I'm with you on this one...Having 2 dogs, a cat and 3 kids in the house makes it hard to keep a "clean" house.

Those pics are adorable. Is it just me or do ducklings totally look like they know some key truth but they're just not going to tell you. Because they're ducklings and they don't have to.

That's right!!
Mom likes the top hats of the polish and the Welsummers of Kellogg Cereal fame. Typically she does not like all black chickens, says they look mean, but saw Black Austrolorps in person and was astounded at how beautiful they were. I like brown egg layers, definitely DP, colored eggs are fun, but I have champagne taste and a beer budget. My original plan was quite different than what it is now. Mom has shown such an interest in the chickens, just want to keep her interest going. It has been a good diversion for her since dad died last December of cancer.
I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your dad.

So sorry for you and your dads loss.

The rainbow on my way home tonight was incredible!

8 little Turkey chicks so far! Mom is so determined to sit on her pile of eggs, I decided to pull the chicks... it's been 3 days for some and she's not getting up, so, glad she is determined, but I'm going to baby site for a while!

Beautiful rainbow! Thank you for posting that. And those little turkeys are so cute and fluffy!!!! I'm going to assume they are eating turkeys, right? Do people keep turkeys as pets? What are the best turkey's to eat? I think next year I want to get cornish cross chicks and some turkeys to butcher.
Just thought I would pop in and share. My DD 6th grade class hatched out 5 of 6 of our EE eggs. They all came here his morning. I love those chubby cheeks. The kids even got to see one break free from the shell. The others came in the middle of the night.
Oh how I love those chubby cheek on EE's!!! Mine are just over 7 weeks old now and 3 of them have super puffy muffs. Ahhh they are so cute!

I am super proud of him...he just graduated last Saturday with his Bachelor's degree.
One of the chuckle pullets moved herself into the big coop on her own last night.
I keep meaning to ask what is a chuckle?
Talk about getting your ducks in a row....
Oh bother! Those things are adorable! Stop posting pics of ducks or I'm going to have to get some!

Zomg, Raz, you're killing me with all the painfully adorable duckling photos.

(I do not want ducks. I do not want ducks. I do not want ducks. I do not want ducks. I do not want ducks. I do not want ducks. I do not want ducks. I do not want ducks. I do not want ducks. I do not want ducks. I do not want ducks. I do not want ducks.)

Yea, the bees are home. Two 5-frame nucs with laying queens. Now I have to get busy and construct the hive bodies.

I'll be curious to see what the chickens do when the bees are flying back and forth.

Congrats on the new bees! Are these your first? Bee sure to get the woodenware complete before the nucs get too cramped!

My chickens completely ignore foraging bees. Now if they see a moth or something, they'll pounce. But a honeybee or bumblebee doesn't even get a second glance.

VJ, the chuckles are the chicks that I got in January from Avalon. Every time I would type "the littles" on my touchpad, it would auto correct it from littles to chuckles. SO, they are the chuckles.

Speaking of them... Hawk (Jace named her) Put herself back in the big coop tonight. Fia was picking on her a bit on the roost. Freaking Fia... SO, I grabbed my pure white faverolle pullet out of the chuckles coop and set her up on the roost with Hawk. I haven't named that one yet... I am thinking maybe Fabula... Or Elphaba... Well anyway, she settled in just well.

I need a drake. I don't really want one, but my ducks are wanting one. OR, I need some fertilized runner/cambell/orpington duck eggs.. any of those would work. WHY? Well, I have a silly duck who has decided to go broody. Here's how I found her... I kept looking out the back deck to their pen. I could see 3 of them, but not the 4th. WHO happens to be the smallest of the group. Well anyway, I finally see her out, and I went out and fed them some treats. Well then I don't see her again. I went to go and fill Leila's and chick's water-er, and she's in the nest box. She's uncovered the eggs, all 8 of them, and she's settled down on them. I was thinking she may be needing to lay her egg still, but there are 8 eggs under her, so she has laid her egg already today. Yeah... No kidding. Poor thing will end up sitting FOR EVER! So, anyone near me have 4 eggs they'd be willing to part with? Or, ducklings they'd be willing to part with in a few weeks? I could just try tossing her out a few times a day and keep taking the eggs... Poor Leah... LOL.

I have moved the tractor to a nice level spot in the yard. AND I found a spot where I forgot to put in screws. HOW THE HECK!! Yah. Glad I discovered it now. HAHA. Well anyway, It was light enough for me to move with out wheels. SO, maybe not need to put them on after all. AND this is with a shingled roof. SWEET! I was intentionally building it as light as I possibly could with the biggest size I figured I could personally handle. SWEET! I just have to install the door and the hardware cloth.

RaZ, its good to know you have all your ducks in a row. LOL.

VJ - Glad to see you back on and hopefully feeling better.

Bretheren - glad your mom has found a hobby. We had chickens 8 years before my husband died and kept them for 4 years after. The chickens brought us a lot of laughs and joy.
When one would die, we would all cry like babies. It's really good therapy!

I've been keeping bees for nigh on 20 years or so. My last colonies died out so I am re-building. I build my own hive bodies and supers, but I buy the frames and foundation. These nucs weren't supposed to be here until next week so I have some hurry-up wood working to do.

I did buy an observation hive from a commercial source but it won't be here until Monday or Tuesday. I think the nucs will be good for a couple days.

ROFL

Oh, Udon, why you be so good... I think I am going to be sick. Anyway, I got super duper amounts of things done today, and now every single little itty bit of me is killing me. Got around half of the mowing done yesterday, and it kept shutting off on me, so I had to pull that blasted thingy so many times. It kept needing to be primed and it took a bunch of pulls to get it started every time. This morning I woke up with my right shoulder and arm sore as all get out. Still had to finish the mowing, though... we have too much to mow. Anyway, the lawn mower wasn't behaving any better today, so rinse and repeat, only this time my arm already hurt, it was agony! HOW DID I GET THIS PATHETIC!?

Soooo... I also moved the trampoline to the other side of the house, which actually I have decided was a bad idea to do on my own. What right do trampolines have to be so heavy and unwieldy? And I dug the old winter pool cover out of the back of the garage, and it had the insolence to be ungodly heavy and unwieldy too! I dragged it out to where I am putting in my new garden and unrolled it, and it is way bigger than I thought it was. So.. the days I spent all day hauling old plywood and chipboard out there to lay down... pointless. The tarp covers the entire area, and then some. The "then some" was a problem. (Is anyone still reading this?) I have a ginormous brush / tree pile there, it's 10 feet around and taller than I am. :( So I moved all that, it was probably seething with black widows, but so far I still stand.

And then there were the three giant piles of horse manure I had already shoveled and hauled and shoveled again onto the plywood and chipboard. They were all going to be under the tarp. So I had to shovel and haul those all over again.
hit.gif

However, all the grass is mowed until it grows again, and the garden plot is ready for the load of woodchips coming this week, and at least all that stanky plywood and chipboard are disappeared now. And I am never moving the trampoline by myself again. I think my spine is going to snap.
