Oh, no, she's got clear eyes, nostrils, cant hear nothing as she's breathing. But thank you. I am hoping she's not going to keep having problems with the heat... I think probably with the crazy changes we are having... its probably just affected her the worst. I am thinking of getting some gatorade for them... Now... just what flavor... LOL

Giving them gatorade is a bad idea. Animals are not like humans, your laying feed should contain plenty of sodium to meet their needs. Electrolytes are probably the single most abused and misused medicinal among pet and hobby animal owners, because most people do not understand the implications. You can do a lot more harm than good. Just give her cool, fresh water and a cool place to rest.

No kidding! Why do so many people say to give them gatoraide/pedialite if you can't find save a chick? Or if they are having heat related issues? Well anyway, I will take your word for it since you are the educator.

I did find electrolytes in powder from at FFH when I was in last week grabbing feed on my way home. Its a dollar cheaper there... well anyway, I was looking through what they had medicinally just so I'd know, and they have it for chickens and other live stock.

So, would it be all right to give her a bath then to clean her butt? OR should I just hold off until she is better? Her comb did look a bit perkier by bed time after the grapes and watermelon and fresh cold sled... I hope the cooler weather coming in will help her improve. She is in the chuckles coop with just Criptoe for company, so, they will not heat it up. Plenty of water in there too. Also, they are not on laying feed yet. To many chicks still on the loose yet... But I would guess the flock raiser would also have sufficient sodium? I am also using ACV in the water-ers for all the birds...

Diplomatic? Because, bless their hearts, they don't know any better. Of course they don't bother to try to know any better either. Truth be told, electrolytes/gatorade is highly overused in people. If you're not doing some serious activity in some serious heat you do not need gatorade.

To be honest, I didn't read your initial post on this so I don't know what you're dealing with. That said, if you believe you have a heat issue just keep her as cool as possible. Giving her a bath is fine, I would not give her a cool bath in the heat of the day or if you believe she is overheated at any time. Shocking the system is never a good idea. If you can put a fan out tomorrow or lay frozen water bottles around where she is hanging out that can help. The mister on your hose can be of use, too. Don't spray her down, just set the mister to keep the air cool. Yes, flock raiser is fine. All commercial feeds will contain the appropriate amount of sodium for the birds it's formulated for.

Thanks Olive. She just has a seriously poopy butt from all the skeets. Her vent is clean and not clogged, so as long as that doesn't happen, I will just leave her be until I see she is better. I have frozen gallon water jugs hanging in coops. The chickens, especially the yesmeaties, tend to concentrate under/near them.

Nova- this is yucky, but maggots can be drawn to poop left on any animal. When I worked as a vet tech years ago we would see animals including dogs, ducks, with maggots irritating the skin after feeding on the poop stuck to the butt.

When one of my animals has had poop on them, I wash it off so a butt wash for that hen may be good prevention. I agree with Olive on avoiding the shock of a full bath however. Good luck!
