Swampducks, Robin and Olive do....

That's down the road from us. My boyfriend's daughter worked there for years too. It is a great place. There are several parks like that out here that we spent most of the last few summers at. Unfortunately I can't hike anymore so we haven't been there this year and it makes me sad. I'm glad you had a good time. Next time you're out here also check out River's Bend (my fave!), McNamara Landing and Bunker Landing. There's several other smaller ones but those are all connected by the river and multiple trails! The fishing IS great at River's Bend and Burchfield. When the river wasn't down so low we'd catch some and feed them to the chickens and pigs.
We loved it and will have to try the other parks(landings) We try to get together a couple time of yr to kayak
There is this guy that I pass when I work. He has a really neat set up. Its basically a converted dog pen. I will try and get picture thursday. But what they did was use the metal tubing that you have for chain link fence, but at where the T's would be, they used a modified 4-way and build a chain link roof. Then, over that, they have the tarps to keep the sun and rain out. Built a chain link and wood door and frame. This thing is light enough and still sturdy that they move it around the yard to avoid stressing the grasses. They are growing red meat birds in it now... What are those? FR? Well anyway, in the cooler part of the spring, they were able to hang heat lamps in for the chicks. I am not sure what they have put on the bottom, or if its aproned, it doesn't look like it, but there is also chicken wire around the bottom portion to keep out critters. And the whole thing can be covered in tarps, not just the top. Looks to be about a 10x10 pen/shelter.

Gonna go chop watermelon for my birds.
FR's are Freedom Rangers, we have 15 in the freezer and 9 to go, it is to HOT to do them. they do free range and love clover. they are much hardier then conrnish X we have not eaten any yet.

HAPPY 4th to every one, God Bless America!!
Happy Birthday to those with birthdays this week, Fireworks just for you

If I recall correctly, a carrier is an animal or person who can carry a disease but might not show symptoms of it. Typhoid Mary was a carrier of Typhoid Fever, she never experienced the fever herself, but she spread it to many people.
Raccoons do not always show symptoms of rabies that are seen in dogs or other animals, but may still be infected and could transmit the disease.
From a Purdue newsletter in 2003:
https://www.addl.purdue.edu/newsletters/2003/summer/rabies.shtml
Rabies may take a while to show symptoms at all, and is not a fast killing disease, so an infected animal can carry it and spread it over a number of days, potentially even weeks, before succumbing to it.

If you do not want to kill raccoons that are on your property, that is your choice. Many people here make some kind of living off their chickens, selling eggs and/or meat, and raccoons can decimate a flock in an evening, so many here do their best to eradicate raccoons from their property to protect their livelihood. 'Just build a better coop' isn't always an effective bit of wisdom because raccoons are fairly intelligent and can figure out how to get into even a secure coop. That will also come out during the day, daytime hunting is not a sign of illness, but rather desperation. Hungry raccoons will hunt during the day, putting a flock at risk. Night hunting is easier, safer, but if there isn't enough food around at night, daytime foraging is the only other option.

X 2. Totally agree with that 100%.

Happy Indepdence Day!n

And thanks to my great, great, great grandfather Winthrop Davis of New Hampshire for his service in the War for Independence. And to all the other veterans who helped create this country.

I think I put enough greats in there.

E. Tawas is a lovely spot. And I can recommend a pair of very good vets there. Small animal, don't know that they do much with chickens, but your dogs and cats will get great care. Next time come on over and visit.
Swampsucks - I was up your way yesterday. Man that was a long ride from here. Love going around the big lake though. That is beautiful. If I was to ever move up that way it would have to be in East Tawas. That place is just beautiful.

Happy Independence Day everyone!!!!

A special thank you to all who have served and to those who support them. We wouldn't be where we are today without you.

A personal friend of mine from another thread lives not far from Harrisville (sp?) and he is leaving Friday to move to Alaska so I went up to see him and pick up his blue Icelandic hen he gave to me. So by the time we visited for a bit and I left to come home it made for a loooong day. I love E Tawas everytime I go through there. That makes the whole trip worth it to me.
