Hello everyone! I am new. We just got 2 ducklings....Darkwing and Daisy they are Rouen/Runner crosses...they are about a week and a half old. We also have a cat and a great dane. :) I'm married to my highschool sweetheart. We have 4 kids, 2 boys, 2 girls. I homeschool. We live in Dryden which is about 40 min. West of Port Huron. And now you know more than you ever wanted to about me. :)

We only got .3" of rain out of the system that moved through the state last night but it filled my rain buckets so I'm not complaining. I don't think it's enough to rejuvenate the pasture for the sheep though, my poor sheep. Since we're new to the area, I'm having trouble finding a source of hay for them. :(

Lots of stockyards across mid and west Michigan, get yourself to one and pick up a load. Hay is extremely scant this year, what is available will be quickly bought up by the big farms. Be proactive or you'll have an even harder time.

I must totally suck at google searches because I can't find any stockyards listed any closer than Gaylord. I answered a craigslist add and left a message, haven't heard back. I called the local MSU extension service and left a message but haven't heard back. The local feed store has been out for weeks. I'm about ready to walk across the road and cut the alfalfa growing there... in the dead of night.

BobBry - Your hens are so healthy and fluffy looking. My girls are all bald on back because of the rooster. You have beautiful birds and a very nice secure looking set up for them. Love the morning glories covering the coop and run and making it all shady for them. Looks like you have happy birds!

Thank you.

Ol Dame Fortune has been doin us right, to paraphrase an OLD Blue Eyes sung song. Wouldn't have the great basic structure without previous dog ownership. Read lots of good info written by lots of knowledgeable people here @ BYC and in various books and have been lucky to drift in the direction of following some instructions/hints/tips. Good start with fine birds from Darons flock prior to his unfortunate bouts with disease were a godsend too. I picked his flock largely since I wanted to `help support " local" efforts, sustainability, and youth. (Thought he was younger) BUT HE'S Still young.. Besides he had a great variety of birds and I could just drive over and pick the chicks up after the order was placed and the required time passed. I wonder where HE got his birds from. Some from H.H. in Newago, based on some of the talk here.

I never noticed that before. How often do you see 'guests'?

They often have showed up here.

Anyone in the Eaton Rapids/Holt/Mason/Lansing area have an incubator firing up this week? I have Speckled Sussex eggs and Silkie and Showgirl eggs sitting here because someone messaged me and then never followed through with having them shipped. If not I'll make a big batch of scrambled eggs this weekend lol **

Hmmmmm....if you really want to do it I'm game! I just don't want perfectly good hatching eggs to go to waste. well, not really waste, I'll eat them lol. Why don't I collect tomorrows eggs and then we can meet up on Thursday (oh wait, is that the day you said you were busy?) and you can take them home to the bator! Then, once they hatch, we can sort through and divide the hatch up. You have to keep a showgirl though...it's the law.

Sounds like a plan to me....except I am NOT keeping an ugly dinosaur !!!!! I'm breaking the law LOL. No, Friday I am busy. Today and Friday. Nothing on Thursday. I'll bring your cage back at the same time.**

Does this series of posts mean I still keep looking for fertile eggs to put under my broody? Have two hens that want chicks, I want SS, Wellsummer, Australorp, or . Good healthy ones like Daron supplied. I'm not allowed Roos, which is why i returned 5 of the dozen 'hens' we got back to Daron. He wasn't good at sexing chicks. But that's OK We love the ones we have. Now i realize sexing is difficult to say the least.. The roos we had were really beautiful too.

Anyone notice all the misfortune floks on this thread experience? WE have my sympathy, condolences. There is a silver lining. Have faith in better things to come.

Hay. Or lack of. I told DH to jump on some cheap local deals, he did his usual foot dragging, now i can't find it anywhere! Local auction, mabie, but i know it's not gonna be cheap! Our friend still wants the goats back when his house gets rebuilt in the fall, i told him we'd hang on as long as possible! :( And I'm scared of the feed prices this year, corn here is tassling but not making ears. Even our garden corn, which we've been watering???

There has seemed to be a streak of bad luck for a lot of people lately. There also has been a lot of support that I am certainly appreciative of.

Several weeks ago, I suggested a "no whine Wednesday". Maybe we can add a "tickler Thursday" or a "funny Friday", tell a joke, post a funny, something to make smile.

On a happy note, American Goldfinches have returned to my yard. They were absent for quite some time but I'm hoping they are back to stay.

Do you know the owner of the field of alfalfa? Maybe you can ask him or her to sell you some when it is next cut. Unless they are using it themselves, or already have interested parties.

Hope you don't get into any more trouble for having more birds in your backyard!! Do you have a permit to have them finches on your property??
