Mid January Hatch thread....

We are also planning to set eggs on Dec. 31, hoping for a hatch on Jan. 21 since my granddaughter is visiting that weekend. I've got eggs coming from several BYC'ers including AtlChick, Hot2Pot, CRFarm and Yvonne37894. Eggs should be here Thurs/Fri. and will let them settle until Sat. AM. My first time incubating/hatching. I have a HovaBator 1588 with egg turner, and planning to use egg cartons for hatching. So eggciting!!

Well I just bid on TWO auctions for LF cochins!! Why did I do that?! Lol. I didn't really want to do eggs due on different days in one incubator... I'm not that good at incubating yet. Maybe someone will outbid me on at least one. I lost one of my hens last night so I need more cochins to replace her right?

What happened?

Something dug under the fence and ate her. I need one of those predator light things. I am just glad it stopped at one and didn't go on a killing spree.

Yes, that is very lucky. I'm sorry you lost one, but I'm glad that it was ONLY one. Back in November, something got into my coop, killing all of my hens. My rooster managed to survive, but that was it. So, I find myself starting over.

I was doing that with my first hatch and finally got a hygrometer turns out my humidity was way too high for the beginnig. I still had some hatch successfully because it was only for a week, but you might want to get something to measure it.

I've got 21 due on 01/01 and around 18 due on 01/07 and about 20 due on 01/12 and as soon as I put my 01/01 eggs into lockdown tonight, I've got another 18 or so eggs to replace those with and some Bargain silkie eggs winging their way to me as I write this.

I have eggs being shipped and I plan on setting them December 31 for a Janaury 21st hatch date. I have a hygrometer I bought specifically for incubators and a cheapie one from Wal-Mart. I calibbrated them both yesterday and the incubator one is 10 % points low and the Wal-Mart digital is 8 % points low. I put a sticker on each of them so I will remember that I have to add when checking humidity. I dry hatch but the humidity is only 24% right now so I may need to bump that up a tad before the eggs arrive.

I have buff orpingtons, silver sussex, light brahmas and gold laced wyandottes ordered.
