Mid march hatch a long

I got three chicks out of eight eggs (shipped eggs). I checked the other eggs, two never started; one died very early on; one died mid way; one died during piping (look like it piped at wrong end. For my first hatch I have learned alot, especially what to change the next time! I'm just a little bummed I didn't hatch a single Showgirl out of the eggs, but I do have three very pretty Silkies! So I guess I'll keep looking for some Showgirl eggs, anyone have any out there   If my DH only knew I was looking for more eggs.

I assisted one that pipped on the wrong end of the egg in my hatch last weekend. It was a harrowing experience but the little chick is now the most active one of the bunch, so I am glad I helped him out. I don't think he would have got out by himself.

My eggs started hatching today! I came home and there was a hole in my serama egg and I could see the tip of it's beak. Then there are three brown eggs wobbling around and my ameraucana egg hatched! My kids watched it all! This is all our first time every seeing an egg hatch so it was very exciting!

How do you do that because I have one that started and I think it has stopped. I thought you were not supposed to open the incubator? I would like to help them as much as possible without hurting.

Well, first make sure it isn't a normal pause. It's normal for a chick to make the first pip and then wait several hours before doing anything else. My latest chick pipped yesterday around noon and then didn't actually hatch until noon today, and he's a perfectly healthy little chick. So you've got to be pretty sure something's actually going wrong before you jump in and help. But I got most of my info on assisted hatching from pete55's posts: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/pete55s-page
