How old are your birds?
How long have they been laying?
How many birds and how many nests?

I've seen bird lay off roost when new layers and/or when there's a pecking order thing going on over the nests.

I find an egg in nest at 5 a.m. 2/3 times a week, and 1 under roosts 3/4 times a month. I have 3 inches of straw under roosts, so egg is unbroken unless they land on it, jumping off roosts. It's dark here this time of year at 5 a.m. 20170412_054629.jpg . I check for eggs after sunset when I lock up. My 5 hens are 16 months old. GC
