Mike The headless chicken

Has anyone here heard of Mike the headless chicken. The story started back in like 1945 ( I think) when a Colorado farmer went out to kill a chicken for his wife to cook for dinner. He grabbed up Mike and chopped his head off . The farmer chop left part of the birds brain and some how tottaly missed the jugular vien. So this bird didnt die. The farmer decided to leave the bird alone to bleed out, and went on about his bussiness later he came back and the bird was still alive, and even trying to peck around like normal chickens do. Baffled the farmer decided to wait and see how long the bird would live, the next day the farmer got up and went out side and the poor bird was out side still alive. this bird lived for quite a while, ( i think about 18 months) with the farmer using an eye dropper to give it nutrients. The chicken made it into The Guenise Book of world records. ( pretty sure I spelled it wrong. ) Any way the town this bird was from holds festivals every year in honor of Mike the headless chicken. I LOVE MIKE! Unbelievable! I've told everyone I know about him.. and they don't believe me Oh well!

Hubby even told his farmer boss at work... I think they thought he was pulling their leg!

I know the crazy part is I have lived in within 45 miles of the town he was from and even went to Mikes market wich is named after him. But I never knew the story until now. I am not sure if it was because he had a strong will to live or if he just had a really small brain. But it is pretty amazing anyway.

Good heavens! They should have put the poor thing out of it's misery, I think. But it sure has made quite a festival for the town, looks like. Where in Colorado is this?

I'm in a horribly cynical, crabby mood today, which may account for what I'm about to say...
All I could think when I read this was that I'm sure some other idiots in the world actually TRIED to do this to other chickens after they read about it so that they could also be famous. I hope not!

I checked out a very funny video about chickens at the library and old pictures of Mike were on it, along with his story. I had never heard of it. There was also a piece on a woman who has a little white silkie who is her best buddy and she keeps him in the house with little red panties on and she takes him in the pool with her and holds his head out of the water and holds him against her shoulder while she sort of scoots along on her back. If you can find this movie it is quite entertaining. There were other segments as well. I don't know the name of the movie. It was a 30-minute PBS production.

Mike was from Fruita Colorado. I to hope that no one runs out to thier back yard to chop heads to try to make a mike. But it is rather unusual that this bird live that long.
