Here's how all of my wheaten looking pullets turn out

a male and female whom are very similar but, the male is showing his black band and white tip on the saddle. I pretty much got that nailed this year.. just wish it would spread to the breast

a nice little pullet.. probably a keeper.. looks dark enough to have some black when she matures

another nice boy with a pretty saddle ETA: uh.. I think it the same bird from the above pic

guess sex is a toss up... probably a cockerel with those developed marking.

and this guy who doesn't look like much now but, his dark back ground color and lots of pattern on his wing and saddle give me hope. Too bad I don't think his type will come on.. his tooshie looks a bit small

.I know what you mean about losing photos I worked on my home page last night and then deleated the pics from my uploads,

then had to do it all over again. blyuck.

Got some pics of my beautiful and sweet, vulture hocked, floppy combed boy. Haha! Ironically, his hatch buddies are two MF D'uccle pullets. And i don't see the vulture hocks on them......sigh.....

Critiques on him would be great! Although I know they aren't the best critique pics.

I tried to get a good shot of the vulture hocks, but you can't really see them here.

Wel, he has probably THE best mille fluer pattern I've seen on any cochin.

BUT... not only does he have the floppy comb and vulture hocks AND high stance but, he has absolutely NO cushion. A cochin's shape should be round.. like a basketball round. It should be as tall as it is wide as it long.

Sorry.. what a shame but, beautiful markings. If you just wanted pretty, maybe he wouldn't pass on that comb... I know sometimes they can fall from stress and different things but that looks to be a genetic deformity to me. Still, just keep the offspring that don't have it.

Thanks MsBear! See, I learn something new every day! I thought his type wasn't too terrible, but I am new to cochins (chickens in general) and have been concentrating more on silkies since accidentally falling into those. Cochins were my first love, but all I had was hatchery birds to go off of. He is my first and only from eggs purchased from breeders.

He's still young, about 4-5 months, is there any hope of him filling out more? I know I probably shouldn't breed him, but I hate to keep a roo around just for looks! His comb looks "thin" to me which is why I assume it fell over. It got big FAST, which might have had something else to do with it too. Thanks for the compliments on his color, he was born completely yellow.....I thought I had got duped on his heritage at first!

But once he started feathering, I knew I had something.

Oh well, I will keep him in with his D'uccle girls for now (they aren't laying yet anyway.) I don't have any MF Cochin hens for him, or a D'uccle roo for them anyway! (And maybe he could put some vulture hocks on the d'uccles!

)

This is a pair I had a couple of years ago. See how round he is and low and how his cushion is like a waterfall that flows from hackle to saddle to over his backside. I can appreciate a pretty bird too and your bird is very pretty... apart from the comb and all

but, at some point we cannot call them cochins anymore. It's very important for all of us to focus on the breed first.. then the variety.

Yes, there's a very big difference! I love the "rounded" look! I am moving soon (taking most of my birds with me) but I would love to get some good quality cochins or eggs once i get settled!

I can not believe how much red has come in on Schmoozle this year. His kids are coming out all different patterns and colors depending on whom I cross him with but he is adding plenty of type. I was just amazed at how much he changed in color being over a year old now. There are some very red feathers mixed in with white tips. I'll have to get some photos of his sisters and see how much Speckles and the girls have changed, too.
