Mille Cochin Info

One thing that Schmoozle and his sisters are throwing is the occasional green feet. All my girls that come out with this I am putting in my Frizzle pens but the roos are useable, supposedly. And I get a lot more roos like this than pullets. Always the better roos, too! Ack! The pattern is getting there slowly and I have about 10 or 15 roos that look like this. I am still waiting for them to mature enough to pick the best one. That pattern changes so much with time.

well, isn't that funny. Your roo has the most lovely chest pattern.. so uniformed and mine have almost none but, yours is lacking on the saddle and hackle where I have no problem getting pattern.. .hmmm... sounds like a trade at some point in the future

I'm going to have to get some updated pics of Jackson this weekend for comparison to see how's he's changed over the winter - this pic is from November. So he should now just be coming on a year old this spring.

Yes - I got him from Nancy, along with his sire. To the best of my knowledge, the sire was from Tate's (Ralph's) lines. The sire has hackles that are much more golden-colored, but seemed to be throwing mostly red hackled for her. So it will be interesting to see what I get.

One of the things that struck me about this roo is how nice and even-lengthed his primaries and secondaries are - this is one thing that a local Cochin breeder pointed out to me to always be on the watch for, no matter what the color variety. With the MF pattern, it really stands out.

So...please pardon my ignorance, but is "vulture hocks" ANY long feathering on the hocks/legs?

I have the pic in the SOP, but the cochins confuse me b/c they just have SO much fluff!

Quote:
Vulture hocks are STIFF feathers, and are normally inclined downward toward the ground.. The hocks on Cochins should be "covered with soft flexible feathers, curving inwards about the hocks, free from vulture-like feathering" (from the ABA SOP).

Many times juveniles will appear "hocky", so if they're young, you should probably give them another month or two.

Thanks very much!
I read that, but was doubting my understanding!!

I was looking at my 9mth pair and then their 5wk babies.
They have soft, fluffy feathers that curve inwards on their legs.
Soft like the rest of their feathers - sounds like we're good!!

I remember Jasper - I thought he had great coloring. I was sad when I heard you lost him.
