Hi all:frow new to cochins, but have read the thread (and the mind reels!)

If one wanted to work with this breed/color, what is the correct "formula"

I have this female:

and this roo:

I also have 9 of their little cockerel offspring to pick from:

Should I go back to type and find a nice mottled?
Is my pullet typey enough? or do I need to replace both hen and roo?

Do any of the babies look like they might be better than their father?
3 or 4 of them are coming in with the chevron patterning.

What coloring is the best way to go?
Which coloring should be avoided?

How old do the babies need to be to tell if they are "keepers" or not?
After the juvie molt?

Your hen will be a great start for you.

I would find another roo with much better type. Get as much coloring as possible closer to what we are working towards. Roos are so much easier to find than hens. Many folks on here have awesome roos and would be willing to part with a nice one, I am sure. Look for the white tips, black chevrons and good red. Not impossible to find with what I am seeing from people posting here.
But first and foremost it has to be as good conformation as you can get your hands on. Without type, you only have a pretty bird. With type, you have a fantastic bird.

Some of your chicks show great promise. I would continue to watch them grow but unless you plan to start another breeding pen then I would find homes for all the roos and if you have any pullets watch them mature and decide what is the best to keep, if any. Once you breed more then you will probably be able to tell at 2 months old what to keep and what to cull.
I would not keep any of those roos to cross back to the mom.

The hardest thing for any breeder is to cull ruthlessly. But to make any progress you have to.

It has been super hard for me to part with nice patterned pullets with bad type. Especially when I see a hen with sad coloring but fantastic type. Again, my roos help with so much so I have way too many nice roos and not nearly enough good hens. <sigh>

Thanks Nadine and Fattie!

Great news on the pullet!!
Bummer on the roo (but I thought so...) - it's too bad b/c they are SO bonded and cute together.

He's also a super little "provider" and has a great temperament.

The little guys are almost 6 weeks old, so I'll post them again in 2 weeks!
I can start another pen, but need to get some GIRLS!! Think all mine are cockerels...

So...I shouldn't keep any of the kids b/c why?
Will the roo's type pop back up again through the generations?
or does it "dilute" the good type from the pullet and set me back a few generations?

Anyone out there have a roo they might want to part with to pair with my little hen??

I would put a breast pic up but it would embarass me

*sigh* Guess my lil guys aren't all that great. I'll just work on my lil flock by myself, just keep quiet and read and try to gauge mine by others pics.
