Mille Cochin Info

I wanted to share my eggcitement! My young Mille Coop (pullets from Katelyn and my own home bred Milles) have begun laying! Some started before the cold set in but stopped back before Halloween. Someone started again - I believe one is the smutty buff columbian from Katelyn. Kids saw her on the nest... Possibly going broody, too. I swear, these Bantam Cochins insist on hatching during the coldest months of the year.

I also cleaned out some more cockerels. I sold all my cockerels except for Junior and one of the young calicos. He has the widest tush, best leg feathering and the best looking head. Junior is looking pinched right now, but I hope it's an environment based issue (girls picking at his tail, etc) because he's always been a ball shape and always wide in the cushion. Beakman, my mottled rooster, also stayed. This time. I do have a mottled pullet finally! I've only been hatching mottleds for a little over a year.

I need a new, better, larger incubator this year. And I need to build a huge grow out pen. Or just use the garage. Hmmmm.... LOL!

Wow! You are going now and you have the fever! Spring is not far off!

Thanks!
Jury's still out on whether Fricassee is a pullet or not.

Most of the time I think so. Here's a picture of her from Monday

I'm looking forward to seeing how these 2 mature.

The frizzles are wild, aren't they?

As far as telling sex it kind of depends on the chick, most I can tell within a few weeks, but sometimes they'll fool you. I have discovered on the yellow chicks if the first feathers come in black it's a cockerel, and if they're lighter brown/ tan it's a pullet. Lynne pointed that out to me awhile ago and it has proven true every time. "Usually" the boys start getting red to their combs at an early age, 2 weeks or so, but again, not always.
