Mille Cochin Info

Quote: trimming or plucking the feathers around the vent of rooster and hen to enable better 'contact'... you trim below the rooster's vent and above the hen's... if you cut the feathers, that could create some sharp stubble that might be uncomfortable for both, so many pluck a few feathers at a time and keep it thinned down.

I have 3 known fertile Byron eggs! I just set a few more tonight! Yep, should have plucked earlier. Now, to get him over his daughters...

Oh! and had a few hatch yesterday and today! WHOOT! I need pics!
Bad news for the day is that my 'friend's' Amberlinks almost killed my first MFC hatched for the year. They did kill another chick (hatchery bantam Cochin or something). She still may not make it. She was totally scalped. They have been housed together for the last month and a half and then all of a sudden... Oh well. Amberlinks will be leaving since the 'friend' and I are not on good terms.

Woot! Congrats on the hatches and the fertility!

I have two MF Cochin in the bator, if they are infertile.. I am thinking it is butt plucking time!!!

Yup, sounds like the Amberlinks need to go down the road. Sorry this happened!

Interesting color cropped out of my MF's I love her to bits, she has so much personality and is gorgeous. Just thought I would share.
She is very pretty

Picture day! For the chicks, mainly. But, I will share the pens now that they are "done" and set up.

Cee with Amy & Amelia.
The girls are hatched from Amy's Eggs and Cee is a Byron x Mildred kid.

Junior (I know his comb is HUGE) with the Smutty Buff and my best 3 MF patterned girls.
Junior is a Byron x Millie kid. The partridge based girl hatched from Rosalyn Picken's eggs. The others came from Katelyn.

I didn't get any new pics of Beakman over the Bridgette x Bryon daughter. Nor any new ones of Byron and his current harem.

But, the chicks..

I have a load of black ones from Beakman's pen. I did not care to share them. I had to euthanize one today - it has been raspy and sneezing. I have around 100 chicks in with him and he's been doing it for a week and no one else is having issues. He was in with the two older ducklings and I think he didn't fair as well as the others in the wet and stink the ducks caused. That big duckling was a serious PITA and would have the brooder soaked in less than 15mins of it being cleaned and in less than 12hrs it would stink like vinegar. The brooder conditions is all I can figure caused his issues. Thankfully the ducks are outside now and the chicks have that new, huge brooder!

I also hatched a chocolate bantam Orp with full feathered leg shanks! I was all excited when I saw it! It's not fairing well, though. It was one of the shrink wrapped chicks I helped out.

Thanks! I am not fond of his tail, but I kept him over this brother because he was wider. I needed another boy and he was the best I had/have at the time.

I forgot to mention that someone in Junior's harem has been stealing tail feathers. Since the smutty BC is the only one with a tail, I suspect it is her. Of course, the MF in front of both pics is broody... Maybe it's her? Even poor Junior is missing 80% of his tail!
