Mille Cochin Info

Roosters on bantams are supposed to have small combs? I was just admiring mines pretty combs today. :( lol. Heres some photos of my two bantam cochins. They were hatched a few days before July 1st. At the moment they are being segregated from the rest for being mean to the meat chickens. Other than being little brats I think they are gorgeous birds. :D
Pretty birds! As for the big combs... my main Roo, whose color and shape I like, has a bit of a long comb, I really do need to cross him with a girl with a nice tight comb.

Anyone here give much thought to shafting? I seem to have a lot of that going on….

Also, we had our MFs in a show at the beginning of August, there were 7 there all together and the judge placed our best 'typed' girl after 2 of our girls with better color, and told us that was why he was placing them that way. What ever happened to 'building the barn before painting it'? I guess because they were entered as MF and not AOV, and our girl with the nice type is more mottled looking…. Still managed to confuse me.

Those roosters are gorgeous! I'm glad you brought up the issue of large/ small combs. On the Cochins Int site there is an online show and partial evaluations have been posted. One of the judges most frequent comments was that the combs & /or wattles were TOO SMALL.

I'm having an issue with "thumbprint" combs in some of my roos, which this judge has also pointed out in several entries. This is where the blade of the comb twists a little.
This is our fair week and I paid close attention to the cochins of course, in the Black entries there was only one bird who did not have it. I talked to a prominent breeder in our area and he said yes, it's a fault, but not a big one as far as points go.

lol I guess I am not alone in liking the big combs! They are so cute and more 'roostery' to me. My lf cochins have small combs and they seem right for them.
So do the bantams and the LF have to abide by the same standards?

Yes shafting is very prominent on my best colored/ patterned girls as well.. Just another thing we've got to work on!

I think you're right about entering in AOV.

Similar yet separate.
